This is a book that will change the way you think about teaching the Chinese language and Chinese literacy. Dr. Terry Waltz shares not only the what but the how to use CI with students and build up proficiency and literacy. A book that parents can also benefit from if Chinese is the target language for home or homeschooling. It's one of the best Chinese language instruction books in recent years.
A great introduction to Terry Waltz's way of teaching Chinese through TPRS methodology. Obviously this book is much more useful for teachers than for students, but nevertheless it's a short read and you learn a lot about the thought that goes behind deceptively simple-seeming lessons. I took some lessons with Terry last year, studying Chinese through TPRS and will be continuing with that now that I've been reminded of its efficacy.
I teach ESL and Spanish using TPRS methods and I am learning Chinese. I wanted to read this book because the author has a lot of experience using TPRS to help students acquire Mandarin. Her explanations are clear and her tone is positive, practical and inspiring.
If you are currently teaching Mandarin using a grammar-based method, I encourage you to read this book and consider trying TPRS and the practices outlined in this book.
This book is an introduction to the Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) language teaching technique, which was new to me. It's a good introduction to the technique, modified for Chinese use. Not that I will adopt these techniques wholesale, but there were lots of good ideas in there that I hope to use in my own work.
I'm not a teacher -- I read this looking for ideas to help my self-study. To that end, I didn't really find much new, as it was all pretty general and I had seen most things from other sources already.
