I can't find the correct version of this marvellous art history book in the Goodreads files. I have the 2 volume updated version which means that the plates are all in volume two so one can read the commentary and have a good look at a large and detail copy of the painting at the same time.

This is a good book to browse, great as research for writers of Victorian historicals and for art lovers wanting to know more about the painters and their paintings. Well worth the struggle to hold each massive volume. Settle down in a big comfy chair and enjoy reading it there.
