The High #1

After the High No. 1

Rate this book
In book No. 1, an otherworld omen pays Derek a visit, haunting the ex-salesman with his past and the whip cracking witch he left behind.

This new romance series follows two passionate pagans. Soulmates since birth, Derek and Faith were never lovers...just two driven spirits headed down two separate paths. Derek always dreamed of having a big warm family and falling in love with a woman nothing like his cold corporate mother. Faith had her practical heart set on landing a top floor executive suite by the time she turned thirty, hoping to settle down with a man completely opposite from Derek and her stir-crazy father. Heartbreak and betrayal forced the two friends apart, but it turns out they didn’t need each other to achieve their greatest goals. Now three years later and miles of unspoken distance between them, they’ve both dead-ended in the aftermath of finally getting what they always wanted.
This new romance series is about addiction and loss. About walking on the edge without falling off, and never giving up on pursuing eternal happiness.

After the High No. 1 features adult topics, layered around a passionate love story, a heartwarming plot and a touch of twisted humor.

No. 2 coming soon - feel free to follow me or visit my blog for updates & more.

I’ve always lived on the more alternative side of life. Sometimes I zig when everyone else zags. It didn’t always make me the most popular girl growing up in a small East Coast town with nothing to do. My parents were extremely strict and sheltering, and I wasn’t really allowed to go anywhere except for the library. Books have been an important part of my life ever since, especially now that things have slowed down for me a bit.
While I love a good Science Fiction or Fantasy novel, Romance is definitely my preferred genre. I read to learn about places and things I’ve never experienced. To escape. And to fall in love with both a story and it’s characters.
I've always wanted to write, and lately I've had a little time to experiment. Eventually I'd like to publish lots of passionate love stories once I have more time. A lot of my inspiration comes from music, especially artists like Depeche Mode and songs with intricate, haunting sounds and poetic lyrics.

I'm always looking for new friends as long as you're 18+.

2.5 in Faith we trust stars

After the High is the beginning of a dark erotic romance, one that was gifted to me by my dear friend Donna; and I do feel quite bad that I didn't fall in love with it. In short, I was lost, confused but I blame it on myself, as my reading schedule was so out of wack that it took me almost a week to finish this shortie. Sadly it resulted in me not having any idea what was going on, just that Derek has otherworldly gifts and his time as a "free man" is coming to an end. I didn't feel a connection to him or the other people in the small town, but I was quite intrigued with Faith, the mystery of her and her power of this man. This book left me with questions and a sense of not really knowing where I want to go from here, I think I will put this series on the side for now and possibly come back to it when I am more prepared.

*My dark-o-meter is on the higher end, so in my opinion I wouldn't classify this as dark, maybe in the coming books???

**and there is no sex in this book either ... just a pre-warning since it does say erotica.

4.5 pleasantly surprised stars.

Wow, this story appealed to me on so many levels, well bedside not being enough sexy time, but that's on me and not a well penned story.

I added this story to my TBR list after reading book 0.5. I had high hopes the author had so much more to offer, so jumped at the chance to read to review this story, and she did not disappoint.

The world and character building was fantastic. I'm really excited to have stumbled across this series and cant' wait for the next instalment.

Footnote to synopsis: I personally have not tagged this story as being dark but realise what people view as 'dark' is subjective.

I received a copy of this book as a gift from a good friend of mine here on Goodreads. All she asked in return was for me to give an honest review, so here goes.

Overall I was very interested in this story. I did find it a bit difficult to follow at times as the author seems to just tease the reader with little snippets of the main character's past. I did find that reading Before the High No .5 - Faith's First Time did help make better sense of this story in some ways. I would highly recommend reading the .5 story first, but I must warn here that the .5 story is not for anyone easily offended by kinky (pegging) sex.

I also had trouble with the author seeming to get off track at times veering off into things that didn't seem to relate to the story such as "Even though he'd installed a custom stereo and speakers in his cab he kept the music off. What was the point? All of it sucked anyway, and the stuff that didn't he'd heard a zillion times over." I'm not sue why this was even in the story. It seems like useless filler and I don't see that it helps the story in any way.

I don't get the Derek and Melissa relationship at all! Why does Derek put up with her? Far from being an "angel" Melissa seems more like a frigid mean hearted bitch and the way she flaunts her scumbag ex-boyfriend in front of Derek is just unforgivable. I understand that deep down Derek is a submissive person, but that doesn't mean he has to allow his "angel" to cuckold him.

I didn't like the way this first book in the series ended. It just seemed to stop. Not like a cliff hanger, just like it was cut off. I think Derek should have at least made it to the home and bath store to get the donation for Sunday.

I will definitely read the next book when it comes out.

Great start to the series. Wonderful worldbuilding and character development. I enjoyed the combination of magic and the contemporary setting. The main character is intriguing, and I feel invested in the many challenges he faces. There are hints of much more intense action still to come, which I've very much looking forward to.

The darkly mystical back story appealed to me on so many levels and wound so perfectly around the hints of bdsm.
