Michael Hartnett (Irish: Mícheál Ó hAirtnéide) was an Irish poet who wrote in both English and Irish. He was one of the most significant voices in late 20th-century Irish writing and has been called "Munster's de facto poet laureate".
When Michael Hartnett died in the autumn of 1999 I went to a local bookshop and bought his three translations of older Irish poets: O Bruadair, O Rathaille and this volume, Haicead, which translates 17th century poems into English with tenderness and sensitivity. They weren't disappointing then, and eight years on their description of the events in the Ireland of that time remains compelling.
