This reads more like a Gothic romance than a historical mystery, although it is both historical and includes many mystery elements. Set in February 1774, the American Revolution has not yet began, but there are rumblings. A group of passengers, travelling by stagecoach from Boston to New York are stranded at Greystone Tavern by the weather. There they become enmeshed in murder, spies, army deserters (from the British army), and even a legend of hidden pirate gold! All this in less than a week. When the story begins, Charity Osborne's father has recently died, and her uncle is taking her to live with him in New York City. Just like every Gothic heroine, Charity foolishly head into danger as well as tumbling head over heels in love. While I found it interesting and hard to put down, it may not be to everyone's taste. "Louisa Bronte" is a pseudonym of Janet Louise Roberts.
