While on her way home from work, Elle Jameson is abducted by a human trafficker. Her abductor, Sloane Devlin, is a man cloaked in secrets and contradictions. He takes her away from the traffickers he works for but will not set her free.
Sloane claims all is not as it seems and that he will see her safely home. Elle cannot separate the truth from the lie yet despite her resolve she is softening toward him and believing him, trusting him, may cost Elle her life.
*** Caught is a novella that takes place between the Protectors books and may be read on its own
USA Today Bestselling Author Karen Fenech writes romantic suspense novels and short works of suspense. She is the author of the romantic suspense series, The Protectors. Karen's novels and short suspense fiction have received critical acclaim and have been translated into several languages. When Karen's not writing or spending time with her family, she loves to shop, watch movies, and just kick back in a comfortable chair and read.
This is a kidnap and assault fantasy dressed up as a story about a Navy Seal. I'm sure it's entirely possible for a female architect to be stolen and sold, but we know from court cases that human trafficking really involves large numbers of poor women from poor countries, who are told they will get work, but are sold to brothels or as domestic staff. The Seal should not have broken his cover or slept with the captive woman; he would have to explain himself to authorities afterwards, including in court. And there is no way the woman could give full consent. And she was captive for many days and didn't require any feminine products.
If you want to see this as a lesson in Stockholm syndrome, read it, but be prepared for strong language and adult scenes. I downloaded an ARC from the author. This is an unbiased review.
This book follows Elle Jameson as she is abducted to be sold off via human trafficking. Elle ends up getting rescued by her original captor Sloane and now needs to figure out how she can trust.
Prior to being abducted Elle had a job as an architect assistant and seemed to be going well with her life. During her abduction it becomes a little detailed and the emotions that come through bring it to life. I felt like the author was connected to Elle when she was describing now only what was going on, but how she was feeling.
Elle is the main character and the only POV that we get during this book. I enjoyed learning more about Elle and also seeing the situation through her eyes.
Although this is a short novella I would have loved to see duel POV from Elle and Sloane. I feel like Sloane had to have a lot of emotions going on I would have loved to read about.
After reading this novella I will be looking into reading some more Karen Fenech. I enjoyed the short story and also enjoyed the author's writing style.
I would suggest this as a perfect weekend read. It was easy to sit down and read this book quickly while being cozy on the couch.
I received a copy of this book for signing up for Karen Fenech's newsletter. This does not effect my review or opinion of this book.
This is a short novella in the Protectors series which can be read as a stand-alone.
On her way home from work a man bumps into Elle Jameson, before she knows it she’s drugged and abducted. She awakens to find herself a victim of sex trafficking and she’s about to be sold. Her horror and revulsion is tangible, she’s filled with fear and lack of hope. Then something strange happens, the man who abducted her does it again. He takes her away from the people he works for but doesn’t set her free. He says she’ll get home but nothing else and keeps her locked up. She doesn’t understand this turn of events and has no reason to trust a man who’s actions are inconsistent with his words.
Sloane Devlin had an order to fulfill and the woman on the street fit the description of the woman he’d supposedly been shadowing. He’s being watched and when the opportunity arises he sedates and then abducts his victim. But she’s not the woman he meant to take and there was no turning back, he had to deliver. Though not able to save her from the sex traffickers sooner he does manage to get her away from them but she’s not safe from them. He’s a man keeping secrets that cannot be shared.
This novella had some raw scenes that made me cringe. Not having read this series before I had no knowledge of who Sloane might be, just an idea from events that transpired. At first you had to hate Sloane for what he did but then are made to wonder as he does treat Elle well even while keeping her locked up. Nothing is at it seems. As the two spend time with each other they connect. But is this just a game to keep the woman for himself? This was an interesting novella with characters that intrigued me and an explosive ending that I did not see coming. I’d call this story romantic suspense with a taste of the darker side of humanity.
Caught by Karen French Starts with praise of the author's novels and summaries of the books. Story of Elle and she's saving money enough to now start looking into her own apartment. As she strolls the city streets looking in shop windows and imagines things to buy that would fit in her new place she is abducted, drugged and taken away. When she wakes up she's in a cage and she hears others talking about sex slave and she knows she is in harm's way. Sloanne is the man who took her and Martell is the one who wants to buy her. Next time sh e wakes up she's in a room with a bed and not much more. She is chained to the bed and Sloanne shows up with food. She learns he is there to help her and also more of why she was taken. Mystery, action, scary, erotic sex, guns and action are all part of this very short story.
A young woman abducted and manhandled by three different men. The first one, with expediency and emotional detachment. The 2nd, in a possessive and domineering manner. The 3rd in a lecherous and demeaning manner. Luckily, the first man was not as detached as his persona appeared. However, I won't go further for it is a fantastic and dramatic account, best told in the writer's rendition of the tale. I have voluntarily submitted this review after reading an advanced copy of this book.
This book is my first by this author. A case of wrong place wrong time. Intrigue and suspense with some romance thrown in. A lot of action for a short read. I will be looking to read more from this author.
***I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review***
First this is a part of the Protector series of books by the author that I haven't read but plan to put them on my TBR list. As the title states, It can be read as a standalone without knowing anything about the series.
Elle Jameson is on cloud Nine and walking on her way home she's abducted by two sex traffickers. What she doesn't know is one of them isn't what he seems. She wakes on a ship and to her horror is up for the highest bid to a specific man.
Sloane realizes he made a horrific mistake and that Elle isn't the one he was supposed to grab. He's able to grab her before she's sold. But can she trust him? He keeps telling her that nothing is as it seems and to trust him that he will get her home. After six weeks there's a sense of betrayal and all secrets are revealed. This was a quick read but well worth it. I highly recommend it to anyone what to try an new author.
Elle is abducted and offered for sale as a sex slave. The man who is to buy her is dangerous and vicious . Sloane has got exactly the type of woman that was ordered, unfortunately it's not the correct one. This is a strange and violent story. Not for those easily upset. Is there a hero in this? Can our heroine hope to escape? Does she want to?
This is a short read that packs so much between the pages. It begins with our heroine mysteriously abducted. The mystery unfolds as an undeniable sexual attraction blossoms between captor and captive. Oooh our girl is "caught" in more ways than one. This was the first story I have read from Ms. French and based on her talent with romance writing, I certainly will read more. I recommend this entertaining and enjoyable steamy story.
Loved this novella! Sometimes in a shorter story the character development is sketchy and the plot thin, but in this story I understood quite well the characters of the hero (Sloane) and the heroine (Elle) and the evils and danger involved in white slavery crime. In fact, the story was so surprising and wonderful I thought it ended too soon! Though short, this story is another beautiful feather in Ms. Fenech’s writing cap.
Read my review on Romancing-the-Book.com for Romancing The Military Man: Ten Hot Military Heroes: The right men for the job: Black Ops, Soldiers, Spies, SEALs, Marines, Special Forces, Army Rangers which this book is included in.
There is always the term: "wrong place at the wrong time". When she's late coming home from her job things get a little dicey and a little dangerous. For a short read it packed a wallop of an adventure. Really enjoyed it. This was the first book I've read from this author and I'll be keeping track of her books for now on. I received this book for free for an honest review.
Loved this novella. The suspense grabbed me at the beginning & kept me reading until I finished. The dialogue & plot keeps you on your toes as you read & the writer tosses in unexpected twists to keep you going. I'm not sure what took me so long to find this author but I'm enjoying reading this series. Each can be read as a stand alone but I'm enjoying reading them in order. On to the next!
This was okay. I think I would have liked it more if it was a full story. Things moved rather quickly from captor to love of my life status. The insta-love was hard to believe both ways for me. There were some good steamy scenes, but overall it was just an alright book short story for me.
Short, quick read. Some explicit sex. Easy to read Novella. An instant falling in love between the two main characters after an abduction and the story tells what happens after that.
This is a short story, about 80 pages. But Karen was able to take the two main characters and make an interesting story that kept me wondering about what was real until the very end. A fun read.
This the second book in this series I have read, third book by this author. I really enjoy her writing. I am not reading in order, but they are stand alone books.
