Book One in the Paine Saga. A CIA-manufactured plague was bioengineered to attack coca plants in an effort to eliminate cocaine production. The plague mutates and destroys food plants worldwide. Governments collapsed and billions died. Follow Michael Paine Martin, the son of a mercenary leader, as he tries to protect himself and his family from the ravages of anarchy.
Many people worry about a zombie apocalypse. I don’t. I worry about what would happen if the military intelligence gets out in the world and spreads diseases and such throughout the world. This story is pretty close to my ultimate fears and is highly disturbing in an entertaining way.
A plague has been bioengineered to eliminate cocaine production. Unfortunately, the plague mutates and has destroyed all food plants in the entire world. As billions die, government begin to collapse. One man – Michael Paine Martin – the son of a mercenary leader tries to protect his family from the anarchy that is going on.
While I would not necessarily call Paine a hero, he does what is necessary to survive. He has learned the hard way that it is hard and somewhat unwise to depend on anyone but yourself. Paine – Time of Anarchy (the first book in the Paine Saga series) by J. Durbin is well-written and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
If you enjoy “end of times” type of stories, then you will enjoy this book. I look forward to the next book in the series.
A surprising book! When I first received this book to review, I thought it was going to be just another story of war. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is a complex and well-crafted story, with engaging characters. Yes, there is war and military action scenes but this book is about much more than that. The book begins with each chapter focusing on a different character’s story as we begin to see that a crop plague has been released on the world and society falls into anarchy. What is original here is the way that author portrays well-developed characters, such as Paine, Marcus, and Ashley, in their own stories but he brings them all together as the story continues and the connections between them are surprising as they become known. This book is the first in a series. The story has a somewhat open end which makes you want to keep reading the series, but it is also complete in itself. If you like stories with military action than this one will be a good choice for you. There is also a lot of futuristic technology used which will also be interesting to some readers.
