“One by one we come to God, young and old, wealthy and homeless, not one of us is alike. Yet we are the same, we’re all learning to live the life God promised, and longing to be fulfilled.”
Danise Jurado has served as a pastoral counselor at Angelus Temple and The Dream Center in Los Angeles, California under the leadership of Pastors Matthew and Caroline Barnett since 2001. She is also the Director of The Dream Center Transitions Program. Danise is a gifted speaker and teacher; sharing at churches, conferences and faithfully teaching a weekly women's Bible study at The Dream Center. She is passionate about encouraging and equipping people to reach their most fulfilled life in Christ. Throughout 15 years of ministry, she has cultivated the tools in this book and they have proven to be powerful, bringing freedom to many. Danise lives in Santa Clarita, California with her husband of 28 years, Kurt Jurado. They have two beautiful adult children, Nic and Katie, a favorite son-in-law, Jonathan, an amazing grandson, Wesley and another grandbaby on the way.
I loved the use of scriptures throughout the book. Some really good thoughts based on those scriptures. I enjoyed it and hope to share it with other people.
I’m naturally a skeptic. I wouldn’t consider myself a “positive thinker” or an encourager. I’m one of those people who has a hard time realizing my full potential in life, let alone what God has in store for me. Oh, He has plans for other Christians but certainly not for me.
Have you ever thought like this? Are you a skeptic as well? In that case, I encourage you to read Fulfilled by Danise Jurado.
Jurado is a talented writer, speaker, teacher and counselor with a passion to encourage others in Christ. She serves as a pastoral counselor at The Dream Center in Los Angeles, California and is also the director of their transitions program. Fulfilled is a result of a ten year process from Jurado’s experience as a pastoral counselor and encourager.
The purpose of Fulfilled is to not only discover our potential in Christ but also break destructive thought patterns and implement prayerful changes on a daily basis. Don’t fret if you don’t consider yourself a “reader” or don’t think you have time to read. The book is thirteen chapters and 119 pages long, and the pages fly by quickly.
Jurado hits the ground running with her first chapter on forgiveness. By far, the concept of forgiveness is one of the most difficult aspects of the Christian faith. Jurado states, “God only asks that we share with others what He has so graciously already given to us” (pg. 6). She provides practical steps towards forgiveness while recognizing it as a process and not an overnight instant change.
IMG_1676Another insightful chapter is on joy. Though it’s the shortest chapter in the book, this section confirmed my thoughts on how I react to other people. We cannot control other people’s actions, but we can control our own attitudes. Jurado says it best when she writes, “We are responsible for our own lives, attitudes, and behaviors. No one can take our joy away from us; however, we have the ability to forfeit it” (pg. 90). This is a process I continue to learn on a daily basis, particularly when I become upset over other people’s actions. We can choose to “forfeit” our behavior, or surrender the situation to God.
Fulfilled contains a plethora of testimonies and personal accounts of Jurado’s life. She vividly tells her story of training for a marathon at the age of thirty-seven as an illustration of pressing on towards a goal. She also describes her struggles with addiction, both her personal addiction to food and her husband’s addiction to alcohol. However, this book is not solely a testimonial of God’s faithfulness in Jurado’s life. She also includes some practical steps in recognizing sin in our lives, and how we can live a fulfilled life for God.
Who should read this book? The book is mostly marketed to women, but her stories and counsel are not just limited to women. Jurado takes great care that God’s Word is applicable to all. That being said, women would relate better to this book due to her stories as a wife, mother, and grandmother. The end goal of this book is for the reader to discover their fulfillment in Christ, regardless of their circumstances and status in life. This was a refreshing read and I highly recommend this book.
Many thanks to Danise Jurado and Kaitlyn Bouchillion for the graphics and allowing me this wonderful opportunity to preview this work in exchange for an honest review.
Danise shares her story with a transparency that will motivate any reader to dare not only to dream but to believe God will fulfill those dreams. She writes about the many obstacles which she and her husband had to overcome on the road to a fulfilled life - alcoholism, failing business, and repeated theft to their business property. They had to learn to trust God each step of the way.
Danise continually points her readers back to the truths and promises found in God's Word which will inspire every reader to live with courage and hope.
I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, which has been given. This book will bless and encourage every reader!
You know that a book is going to be good when you get goosebumps every time you look at it, and I was not disappointed at all! This is hands down one of the most life changing books that I have ever read and I will be referring back to it often!!
The writer clearly put a lot of thought into all the aspects of living a fullfilled life in Christ. This book meant something personal to me in that I was able to visit The Dream Center and work in the summer of 2017. Anyone who has the energy and mission to work with that ministry is clearly living a fulfilled life, even though they may be very tired.
The Dream Center captivated me as one of the most unique ministries I have seen. Also being able to walk into Tent City in LA and talk to the people there who are in addiciton and hardship was a life changer. No one can forget that. The staff at the DC was very dedicated, although I do not recall meeting Ms. Jurado, I wish that had been possible and I had read her book before I went there.
