The Sankofa Season: Collected Poems from the 30th Anniversary Season of Monday Poets

Rate this book
Monday Poets exists to inspire and connect poets and community members across the city of Philadelphia. In 2024, the Free Library of Philadelphia celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Monday Poets program. The theme of this celebration was Sankofa, a Twi word from the Akan Tribe of Ghana which loosely implies that to move forward, one must “go back and get it”. In that spirit, at each event we celebrated a past Monday Poet and introduced a new one. This chapbook is a collection of their poems.

3.5 Stars. A solid mix of poetry with several standout poems, this chapbook feels in many ways like a love letter to the poetry made in and shaped by Philly and the surrounding areas. While it didn’t provide the consistent emotional resonance I’ve gotten from some of my favorite anthologies, it did fill me with a deep sense of gratitude for poetry, for poets, and for the Free Library of Philadelphia’s acknowledgement that we would be lost without the poets in our midst.
