Star of the Week (Hey Jack! #20)

Jack is wearing a happy grin, his 'Star-shaped' badge and his lucky shoes. He was chosen as Star of the Week for Most Improved at Reading. The reward for him is to introduce Tim Little, a famous soccer star, at assembly. He and his best friend Billie joke about saying the name wrong like Little Tim or Lim Tittle.

Jack is nervous so he goes to the bathroom. There he meets Aaron who has been crying. Aaron explains that his dog died the night before. Jack knows how bad he'd feel if he lost Scraps. He decides to let Aaron introduce Tim Little at assembly, to make him feel better.

The other kids are surprised when Aaron goes up to introduce their visitor. Tim Little makes a special announcement about teamwork and working together. Everyone claps when Jack is called up onto the stage for being generous and caring allowing Aaron to take over his role in introducing their star visitor.

Sally Rippin must be a six-year-old at heart. These early readers are very much about emotions and how to deal with feelings.

In 'The Star of the Week', Jack learns what kindness and friendship means to him and to others.

This is an endearing, highly relatable series for young ones who are just becoming independent readers. The fabulous illustrations by Stephanie Spartels literally put you in the picture, and the font/typeface is invitingly clear and large. The 'Hey Jack' series contains exactly the range of scenarios, moods and feelings that young ones do experience, with each story written in a heart-warming manner with a streak of humour. In fact, the opening illustration shows Jack, with a banner identifying his 'mood' - a critically important signpost as children begin to identify what emotions make them and others tick, and build up their emotional intelligence.

20 - Sally Rippin, “Hey Jack! The Star of the Week” (Richmond, Victoria, Aust: Hardie Grant Egmont, 2015).
Famous soccer player, Tim Little, comes to Jack's school.
“'Thank you, Lim Tittle!' Jack whispers. Then he realises his mistake. His mouth drops open in horror.
Tim Little snorts with laughter. 'No worries, Lack Jang.' He winks.
Aaron and Jack both burst into laughter too.” (p42)
