This is a lovely book from a noted British gardening writer and photographer. It begins with a useful section on the history of roses before going on to discuss different types of gardens and ways of using roses in gardens. The photographs are generally excellent (and most were taken by Lord), nicely lit and beautifully composed, and the text, although perhaps a bit dry, is intelligent and well-written. The appendices include a list of recommended roses and an extensive bibliography.
