The Whore Next Door: An Illustrated Memoir by Annie Campbell

Rate this book
“Annie Campbell's The Whore Next Door is simply magical. Part road story part confessional, The Whore Next Door is a tender, joyful, heartbreaking and hilarious illustrated memoir about sex, drugs, work, motherhood, mistakes and triumphs, men and boys. This visually rich and compelling coming of age tale will keep you laughing and enthralled and sometimes cringing. Campbell's subtly powerful tale will draw you in, like sitting at the table with your favorite wild, baby-boomer aunt while she tells you about her youthful travels, romances and struggles. I'm convinced the secrets to survival are contained in these pages.” —Cara Hoffman, author of Be Safe I Love You

Who except for Annie Campbell tells stories with such a winning matter-of-factness and paints paintings with such a comic and baroque exuberance? No one I know of. The Whore Next Door is a double-barreled delight. —Lamar Herrin, author of Fractures

A Journey depicted with wonderful illustrations. It leaves an indelible impression of a positive take on life's ups and downs.—Bob Potts, Kinetic Sculptor

Annie Campbell, a self-taught painter and writer, lives with her husband Harley, in Trumansburg, New York.

Each short chapter of this memoir is accompanied by a beautiful painting. She is so talented. I'm always amazed at people's memories of the past. I don't think I could remember all those details.
I really enjoyed this book. She was super transparent about her life, ie, she didn't edit it, worried about what people would think. Thank you, Annie, for this gift!

A very, very funny biography, accompanied by gorgeous drawings to head each chapter. I am looking forward to Annie Campbell's next book.

Delightful, beautiful, bold, brave!

This book is full of delights - both visual and literary! Each of Annie's beautiful paintings is a mysterious, lusciously colored doorway leading into its own chapter. And you are never disappointed, because each chapter in turn reveals the mystery of its illustration with humor, poignancy, strength and courage. The story of Annie's journey is one of difficulties overcome, told with such humor that you laugh again and again, even as you follow her wild ride through life. She is bold in her no-holds-barred revelations, and brave in her honest self-analysis. The result is a serious work disguised as fun-fun-fun, and it is wonderful!

Annie Campbell's hilarious tale of survival during the 60s sexual revolution is beautifully illustrated. I enjoyed following her adventurous search for a good man while sympathizing with her many struggles as a young mother. Her refreshing openness about sex that is delightful!

Wonderful book

This book brought me back in time to the late 60's and early 70's. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book and would definitely recommend it to others.
