The Caretaker: The BRAND NEW dark, addictive and twisty thriller from Diane Saxon for 2026!

Rate this book
The BRAND NEW edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller from Diane Saxon, BESTSELLING author of The Quiet Wife

I came here to escape. To leave behind both the stalker who turned my life into a nightmare and my controlling mother who seemed to think I was in the wrong.

A teaching job in a quiet village school was supposed to be my fresh start, but the school isn’t what it promised. The headteacher watches my every move - manipulates and criticises - the old caretaker always seems to be there when something happens, but worse than that...

I think my stalker is back!

Then two young girls disappear without a trace. The police search for someone close to home, but I know they are looking in the wrong direction.

Because I know who the kidnapper is.

I thought I had escaped my past.

I never imagined it was coming for me.

And I have said nothing , because I am guilty as hell...

A teaching job in a quiet village school was supposed to be my fresh start, but the school wasn't what it promised. The headteacher watches my every move - manipulates and criticises - the old caretaker always seems to be there when something happens, but worse than that.... I think my stalker is back! Then two young girls disappear without a trace. The police search for someone close to home, but I know they are looking in the wrong direction. Because I know who the kidnapper is. I thought I had escaped my past. I never imagined it was coming for me. And I have said nothing, because I am guilty as hell....

The pace is slow to begin with, but it's not long before the pace ramps up. Nothing seems to be going right for Louise who was promised she would be teaching younger students, but the students are older. She was scammed out of her rental money, and worst of all, she thinks she has seen her stalker. The only person who really befriends her is the caretaker.

This story has a dual timeline and it's told from multiple perspectives. I do like a story that has a stalker, you never know what they're going to do next. Some of the characters are unlikable. It covers abuse and bullying. This is a gripping, suspenseful and twisted psychological thriller.

Louise Walpole starts a new teaching job in a rural village primary school. How will she get on and why is this book entitled “The Caretaker”?

The Caretaker is a British psychological thriller that has generic locations rather than real locations that readers and tourists could visit after reading this novel. There is a passing reference to Telford, so it is safe to assume most of the scenes are set in fictional Shropshire locations. A lot of the story is about Louise’s new teaching job, which at 68 years old, I found quite tiresome. There are constant references to everyday school life and I found it irritating the repetition of DBS checks, safeguarding and stranger danger. All this wretched box ticking got on my nerves and does not make for a gripping read.

Most of The Caretaker was told from Louise’s point of view but the odd chapter was from Darren, her ex-boyfriend and a few chapters from the school caretaker himself. What annoyed me most was the constant shifting time frames, going backwards and forwards. Even the chapter headings declare a time zone from 20 years earlier, 17 years earlier, the past (2022), before (2025), present day (2026) and 6 months later.

The plot was nothing to write home about and the suspense was equal to walking into a cake shop in the late afternoon hoping that your favourite cake has not sold out.

I found The Caretaker to be a complete jumble of a story, making for an OKAY 3 star, yet disappointing read.

I was disappointed with The Caretaker because I know that Diane Saxon can write far, far better books. This is the second book I have read from her and I found A Stranger in the Family to be a brilliant 5 star read. But then I read the acknowledgements at the end and discovered why The Caretaker is below standard. I hope that her quality storytelling and writing returns to form with her next novel.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Boldwood Books for passing me an ARC on the understanding that I post a review.

Louise moves to a small village to take up a post as a teacher. From the beginning, things go wrong.
Her accommodation falls through, as she was scammed out of the rental money.
The post she believed she had, teaching younger students falls through, and she has older students.
She thinks she has caught sight of a stalker she thought she had escaped, but can't be sure.

This is a page turner! I felt it was a little slow to begin with, but it soon hotted up. I couldn't wait to see what else befell this poor sweet woman.
Apart from Fiona and Sam, the only other friendly face is Bob, the caretaker. He seems to take Louise under his wing.

The teachers and head teacher at the school are a really horrible lot! What a toxic environment to work in!
Louise wasn't only escaping her stalker though, her overbearing and controlling mother was another rotten kettle of fish she had to get away from!

There is so much to unpack in this book. It is tense and uncomfortable, but has a satisfying ending.

Bob's story is very sad. He carried a lot of guilt on his shoulders. I became quite emotional reading his story.

I recommend. This is a book to look out for.

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I spent most of this book wanting to shake people, and I loved every minute of it!

Diane Saxon's The Caretaker doesn't disappoint. Louise has taken a teaching job at a quiet village school, hoping to leave a stalker and a controlling mother behind. But the school has its own dark mood, and it lingers over every page. It's the kind of place that makes your skin prickle, and the headteacher's constant watching and criticising doesn't help.

What I loved most was Louise herself. She starts out terrified of confrontation, and watching her slowly find her backbone, one small stand at a time, had me cheering her on. Then there's Bob the caretaker, who is always around the moment something happens. You'll spend the whole book asking yourself what else there is to him.

The shifting timelines and quick glimpses into other characters' heads add extra layers of intrigue. And the thoroughly unlikeable people? Deliberate, and brilliant. I enjoyed silently scolding (okay, mentally thumping) them as I read.

With two girls missing and nobody to trust, I was second-guessing everyone right up to an ending I never saw coming.
Another gripping read from Saxon. Highly recommended!

My thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC. All views are my own.

Thanks to netgalley for this advanced copy, An interesting read , we meet the primary teacher new in post, anxious needing a fresh start, she needs to get away. I loved her ambition for wanting to do the right thing and be a good person it shines through in this book.

I did feel for Louise as she had such a hard time and she can see how poor people treated her, one person she did really gel with was the caretaker and the way this was put together was good. As we have preconceived ideas about the caretaker when you peel back the layer its so much deeper than we realise.

It did feel like two storylines and you are getting to know peoples past and present but it did blend together beautifully towards the end, there are some things we see people do that are just so sad! But as a reader, you can also understand why they behave in certain ways. this book has an underlying focus on the justice system too. There is also some complex and toxic people in this book too.

As they say you meet people along your path and lets just say they see alot more than you realise! They wont be far behind you with a useful set of keys either !

Another very enjoyable psychological thriller from Diane Saxon. The writing kept me interested in what was happening to Louise, although at times I really felt like shouting at her through the pages! The plotting was easy to follow, although it was slow to start off but the pace soon picked up when Louise started her new post in a village primary school. I really liked Bob and would have liked to find out more about him, he's such a good character to read and discover in the dual storyline. If you enjoy a good psychological thriller, this is one for you from an author who never disappoints. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

Thank you very much Boldwood Books for the ARC!

What can I say? I myself do really enjoy a good Diane Saxon thriller.

The only thing in this one that made me give it 4,5 instead of 5 stars was it being told in dual timelines and multiple POV. There is nothing bad about this kind of storytelling. It just sometimes pulls me out of the flow, when reading.

Still, it was a suspenseful rolelrcoaster that keeps you gripped from start to finish and I was really rooting for Louise when reading. Would have punched her ex if I could.... anyway, can fully recommend reading The Caretaker!

Wow! The Caretaker by Diane Saxon was a fantastic read and an absolute page-turner. I was hooked by the storyline and kept wanting to read just one more chapter to find out what was really going on!

Louise Walpole is a primary school teacher looking for a fresh start after escaping an abusive relationship. She moves to a small town to begin a new job, but things go wrong almost immediately. The property she thought she had rented turns out to be a disaster, her new workplace is far from welcoming, and her headteacher, Rebecca, seems determined to make her life miserable. To make matters worse, Louise begins to fear that her ex has tracked her down.

Thankfully, Louise finds some kindness in Fiona, a lovely older woman with a fascinating and mysterious past, and Bob, the school caretaker. Bob always seems to be around when Louise needs help, whether in the car park or on the playground. However, there is much more to him than meets the eye, and I found myself wondering what he was hiding and how he had ended up at the school.

When two girls go missing, the story takes an even darker turn. As we learn more about Louise, Bob and the people around them, the different threads begin to come together. There are so many secrets, suspicious characters and unsettling moments that I was constantly questioning who could be trusted. I certainly didn't see all the twists coming!

I really enjoyed how Diane Saxon gradually revealed the characters' backstories and connected the different timelines. Some of the characters are thoroughly unpleasant, and there are moments that are genuinely uncomfortable to read, particularly those involving bullying, stalking and abuse. These themes add to the tension and make you really root for Louise as she tries to rebuild her life.

Bob was a particularly intriguing character for me. He seems to know far more about the school and its history than he lets on, and discovering more about his past added an emotional layer to the thriller that I wasn't expecting.

Overall, this was a gripping, twisty psychological thriller that kept me guessing right until the end. If you enjoy books by Freida McFadden, with suspicious characters, dark secrets and plenty of unexpected twists, I think The Caretaker would be right up your street!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read this advance copy. All opinions are my own.

I always enjoy Diane Saxon’s writing style, and her books are real page turners. This one is told in the recent past and the present, and later in the book it goes back much further in time, which gave the story an interesting structure.

Although it’s called The Caretaker, most of the story centres on Louise, a young teacher trying to rebuild her life after escaping a stalker. She takes a job at a quiet village school hoping for a fresh start, but she soon finds an overbearing headteacher watching her every move, and she can’t shake the feeling that her past has followed her. When two young girls vanish, the tension really ramps up, and Louise is hiding something of her own, which kept me turning the pages. The caretaker himself, Bob, lingers in the background, and for a long time it’s unclear what his plan is.

Sadly, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I usually enjoy this author’s books. Quite a few things didn’t add up for me, or didn’t flow as smoothly as I’d expected.

I was also expecting a bigger twist. It’s a bit different from the author's usual style, but it didn’t quite work for me, as I do love a gut punch of an ending. It’s still a decent read, and I’ll certainly be picking up her next book.

3 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC of this book.

The Caretaker is a psychological thriller with a plot that feels refreshingly different. The surprise here isn't a twist so much as the story itself, which takes a direction I didn't see coming.

Louise, a young teacher, relocates to a remote village to escape an abusive ex-partner. But almost as soon as she arrives, things start to go wrong. She has been catfished over her accommodation, and when she reports it to the police, she begins to fear that the people behind the scam are out to get her. They turn out to be a local family of thugs. As the incidents pile up, Louise is left wondering who is really targeting her: this family, or the ex she fled, who may have found her after all.

The menace builds through lots of small, unsettling moments, from slashed tyres to being locked in a cupboard. Each one is minor on its own, but together they create a real sense of unease, and the way the book plays out is very different from what you might expect.

A good, gripping read that I'd happily recommend to fans of psychological thrillers. .

Wow! This was a great book and fantastic page-turner.

Louise Walpole is a primary school teacher forced to find a new job after her ex-boyfriend became abusive towards her. Louise moves to a small town, realises that she's been misled into renting a run-down property but ends up with a lovely old lady, Fiona, who used to run a B&B, and also has a history that no one talks about, or knows about... Louise starts work in her new primary school, but there are so many mishaps and she is forever bullied by her boss, the headteacher, Rebecca, and even stalked by her ex.

Thankfully, Bob the caretaker, is always there to help Louise. He also has a past - and I'm not sure how and why he became a caretaker in the first place. Bob is everywhere - from the car park to the playground, and he seems to know a lot about the school and its past...

Two girls go missing, which was the reason why we go through Louise's and Bob's life stories...

This book is very much a page-turner. There are some elements of bullying, stalking and abuse. Fans of Freida McFadden will love this book!

Title: The Caretaker
Author: Diane Saxon
Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Publication Date: November 2, 2026

This story is mostly told from one, single point of view; Louise's. Every so often, it is told from Darren's point of view. It is told over multiple time lines that switch back and forth with no rhyme or reason. It's important to pay attention to the date at the start of each chapter as there are actually 3 different periods of time.

If you're looking for a quick, easy read, then this book is for you! Louise is such a shy, innocent young lady who just let's people walk all over her. Sometimes it was soooo frustrating! I loved the relationships she ended up building even though she was largely treated unfavorably by many people.

There wasn't much suspense, but there were a few moments when I started to feel a little tense. There were a few twists that I totally saw coming, but the final twist was definitely a shock. I honestly never saw it coming!

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood.
Two girls have gone missing, and their teacher, Louise, seems to know that the man who has been arrested is not the culprit.
She arrived there having fled a stalker, taking up a teaching post in a small village where the locals, at first, are not exactly friendly. Now he has tracked her down.
The only person who seems to understand her and who becomes a constant source of support is the caretaker.
This is a novel with few characters but many layers, touching on themes such as harassment and bullying. After all her struggles, Louise eventually resolves all her conflicts and emerges stronger.
The story is divided into different time periods, ‘before’, ‘past’… , and although the main point of view is Louise’s, it also alternates between other characters; however, this doesn’t make the story confusing but rather gives it a dynamism that allows you to devour it in one go without any trouble. Definitely one to recommend.

Many thanks to netgalley, the author and Boldwood Books for approving my request to read this book.

Louise is starting afresh and is looking forward to her new job teaching young children at a school and has her first day all set out in her mind. When she arrives a last minute change has been made which throws her off but she soon recovers and is determined to make the best of things. She finds herself talking to the school caretaker whilst on playground duty who it seems is always watching and is keen to help her as she finds her feet. When two of the children go missing it triggers a police investigation but where are they and who has taken them?

I enjoyed this multi layered book told from dual timelines as we discover more about the characters and their back stories, the caretaker in particular really intrigued me. The twists were plentiful and well created, I always love it when I don't see them coming!

I would recommend this book to others.

This is an interesting thriller which had a slow start but soon picked up and became a story I couldn’t wait to find out more about.

Louise is a teacher who has moved to a new area to escape a bad relationship and a difficult mother/daughter situation. After finding herself conned and her accommodation not liveable she moves into a b&b with a local lady. From the outset the headteacher at her school is a grim taskmaster and her only real friend is the curious caretaker, who could be either friend or foe.

The story is told in a dual aspect and the timeline and soon ramps up the tension, with a possible return of the ex who was a stalker. I liked the main character Louise and was intrigued by Bob, the mysterious caretaker and the possibilities of his background.

One for those who enjoy a psychological thriller and a dual aspect. Good ending also.

The Caretaker was a book I finished in a day and rated it 4.5🌟
Louise has an overbearing mother and an ex that says she’s ruined her life so she’s managed to get a job at a village primary school miles from home planning a new start. Things don’t go quite to plan and things are harder than Louise thought possible but she’s determined to make this a new start until she thinks she’s being stalked and two girls from her class disappear.
I enjoyed this thriller, it had a lot going on and a few different characters. The chapters weren’t too long and I enjoyed them being from different characters enabling you to get a better judgement on their actions. The pace was good all the way through. Louise at times could have been a bit more switched on for a school teacher but maybe that added to her charm? A decent ending and an author I shall look out for in the future.

Diane Saxon’s latest psychological thriller, The Caretaker, is a stellar read that completely delivers on its promises. Right from the opening pages, Saxon plunges you into a sinister, deeply unsettling world where nothing feels safe.

The narrative shifts seamlessly between multiple POV’s; this amplifies the paranoia and leaves you constantly questioning whom to trust. The pacing is relentless. Saxon expertly contrasts a slow-burning psychological dread with sharp, sudden plot shifts. Just when you think you’ve unravelled the dark secrets hiding within the village school, a brilliant barrage of twists completely upends the story.

If you are looking for a genuinely tense, atmospheric thriller that refuses to let you go, this is a must-read!

Louise, a primary school teacher, relocates herself to a small school in the country, fleeing from an abusive relationship and an over bearing mother. Things get off to a disastrous start when the cottage she was hoping to rent is inhabitable, and on her first day at the school she makes an enemy of a long standing teacher. She has a suspicion that she's being watched and she hopes her ex hasn't found her. The only constant is the caretaker who always seems to be around. When two girls go missing, Louise suspects the police have arrested the wrong person but has no firm idea why.
This is a great example of a psychological thriller, the tension mounts but as the reader you have no idea which way the story is going to go and who the suspect is. In this novel especially there are plenty of unsavoury characters to choose from

Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC.

The Caretaker by Diane Saxon is an entertaining psychological thriller packed with secrets, lies and twists. Working in a school myself, I was particularly interested in this storyline, and the premise really drew me in. I could relate to the feeling of being the new teacher in a school and found this aspect of the story especially engaging.

The atmosphere is unsettling, and as the story unfolds, there are plenty of suspicious characters and secrets to keep you guessing. I enjoyed watching the tension build as Louise tries to work out who she can trust, and I was keen to find out how everything would unfold.

A few parts felt a little slow, but overall, this was an enjoyable read that kept me interested. Diane Saxon has delivered another twisty psychological thriller that I would recommend to fans of the genre.

Louise moves to a small town to take up her first teaching job. She’s hiding from someone but have they found her? The staff at the new school aren’t the most welcoming, particularly the headteacher but the caretaker, Bob seems friendly. But what Louise realises is that all isn’t as it seems.

I have to admit I struggled a little bit with the first half. It’s not the first book I’d read by this author and in the past I really enjoyed them. It was eerie and atmospheric but all the characters were unpleasant and I couldn’t work out where it was going at all. The second half definitely picked up a pace though and I sped through it. It was a solid 4 stars.

I enjoyed this book which was told from dual timelines and multiple POV. There were plenty of twists that I did not see coming!
Louise is starting a new job as a teacher and her first day is tomorrow. She is moving out of her parents home to a place of her own. When she arrives she sees the place she paid three months rent for along with a deposit, is boarded up and she realizes she has to find someplace else at the last minute. Things go downhill for Louise from this point forward.
Most of the characters in this book were totally unlikable and the author did a great job developing each one for us to dislike!

Louise took her new job in a quiet village to get away from her stalker and hovering mother. When two girls disappear, she wonders, “Is my stalker back?”
The headteacher is controlling and critical, while the elderly caretaker seems to appear whenever something goes wrong. After the disappearance, Louise becomes increasingly convinced that the police are looking in the wrong direction. She believes she knows who is responsible—but she is hiding a secret of her own.
Louise is simultaneously trying to protect herself, uncover the truth, and conceal her connection to what has happened. This makes trust a central theme which makes for an intriguing and exciting read!

This psychological thriller was definitely a good read. Louise is trying to rebuild her life after a devastating breakup with Darren, who accuses her of ruining his. She lands a teaching job at a small community school, but things aren’t as idyllic as she imagined. The place she planned to rent is unlivable, and the school seems cliquey. Fortunately, Fiona, a bed and breakfast owner, offers her a place to stay. However, like the rest of the community, things aren’t as easy as they seem.

This gripping story will keep you turning the pages, eager to uncover the secrets and twists. If you enjoy psychological thrillers with stalking and unexpected turns, this book is a must-read.

Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC.

I've read a few Diane Saxon novels now and they are an enjoyable read.

I did wonder at times whether there was going to be more of a twist to the story than there actually was. I get easily taken in by red herrings!!

Although the novel is called The Caretaker, the majority of the story centres around Louise as she rebuilds her life after relocating due to a deranged ex boyfriend. The Caretaker plays an intentional, background role, dipping in and out, remaining under the radar.

A nice easy read which didn't disappoint.

A great read that instantly draws you in making it a quick read as try to work out what is going on. Having read other books by this author, this one is just as good. There is always an element of creepiness and realism to the stories and this one definitely has a twist at the end that I really enjoyed. I enjoy Diane Saxon’s writing! As always, I was addicted to the story and couldn’t wait to find out what happened. I was confused during some parts, as I couldn’t figure out what each storyline had to do with one another, but it made more sense in the end. I definitely wasn’t expecting what happened! Don’t skip the dedication at the end of this one if you enjoy this author, it’s heartbreaking and heartwarming, all at the same time!

Really enjoyed this!

I’m an absolute sucker for a dual timeline and short zippy chapters, so this ticked both boxes for me. It was so easy to fly through and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next.

Definitely a bit of a slow burn at the beginning, but once it ramped up, I was hooked. Plenty of secrets and I enjoyed the main characters, it had me coming up with theories along the way.

Overall, a great little thriller and another win for my thriller era!
