This book introduces us to three very different early explorers – Ecuadorian Isabela Godin, Mary Kingsley who was based in Cambridge and Yorkshire-born Isabella Bird. Their stories are retold by Hill-Murphy who retraced parts of some of their adventures. A great storyteller, Jacki Hill-Murphy artfully intertwines the past and the present to bring to life the adventures of early female explorers from 18th and 19th century and engages readers with her travels too. It’s a truly spellbinding and beautifully phrased read and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I particularly like the closing extract of the book:
