Compassionate Careers: Making a Living by Making a Difference is a central component of a larger campaign to mobilize young people to dedicate their talents and energy to making the world a better place. It rests on the core belief that our future greatly depends on the inherently connected and mobile nature of the Millennial Generation, because they will be the first group of people that will actually have the tools and breadth of knowledge to fix the many global challenges they’ve inherited.
The book is based on hundreds of interviews. It includes a foreword written by Desmond Tutu, and a diverse set of testimonies from Jane Goodall, Bill Clinton, Dave Matthews and Carlos Santana, the heads of the world’s largest cause-driven organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Greenpeace and Red Cross, and scores of lesser famous, yet equally fabulous every-day heroes. These stories are diverse and real. They capture spirit, intelligence, imagination and heart. Compassionate Careers also contains practical exercises and resources for young people who are moved to pursue cause-driven work. In addition to its core focus on the incoming generation, the book also serves as a valuable asset to the main influences of these young people, including parents, grandparents or other caretakers, teachers, school and career counselors, and organizational leaders in the cause-driven field. Compassionate Careers is for anyone who feels that sitting on the sidelines is not enough. It’s for anyone who is thirsty for change.
I wasn't really planning on buying this book. I just stumbled upon it, and after reading the synopsis printed behind it, I didn't have second thoughts returning it back to the shelf.
These book tells about people going for compassionate career, how they started and what their passions resulted. Almost analogous to a rags-to-riches story. It also has beautiful and on-track quotes or sayings from legendary people who have made a mark in this world such as Buddha and Maya Angelou. This is pretty useful for a self-help book. It has some resources at the end which you can search up on the Internet and embark a compassionate career on your own. Plus a workbook on the last chapter. After reading the previous chapters, it gives you time (and space!) to do some thinking about your own compassionate career. Definitely inspiring to do some compassionate work out there!
So, there you go. Relevant content, from synopsis to the last text. Support from the role models of the world. Comes with resources. Promotes reader participation. And last but not the least, INSPIRING. 5 stars.
This is a very informative book with plenty of useful information for people looking to change careers or find one that is more meaningful. It features interviews with 100 people who have followed their passion and found work that is more than just a paycheck. Highly recommended. I spoke with one of the co-authors, Jeff Pryor about the book. That conversation can be heard here: http://dougmilesmedia.com/?p=1480
So glad to be workign with Jeff Pryor and Alexandra Mitchell on this important book that will help with intentionality in the nonprofit/social sector and influence the way leaders in the corporate sector develop a culture of giving.
Interesting to see what people mostly around Denver have done with careers that were about more than just makes no a buck. Lots of good resources in the back!
