The Layover

Rate this book
Author David Stone has gone from unknown Independent to New York Times best-seller almost overnight - a transition that hasn't come without a price. After two lengthy tours, David finds his sales at an all-time high, and his marriage to Nicole at an all-time low. And while David has made several attempts to bridge the gap that has settled between them, it seems the emotional and physical connection they once had has been severed beyond repair.

During a layover at the end of his latest tour, David encounters Elise, a beautiful business woman who joins him at the terminal bar. On the surface, the two pass the time together in innocence. But it quickly becomes apparent that, with the bridge to his wife in such a state of decay, even the subtlest attentions of another woman are enough to arouse David's interests.

What happens when casual conversation over drinks shifts to an invitation for something more? Where will David, a once happily married man in a now not-so-happy marriage, draw the line? Will he draw one? Or more important, could he keep from crossing it?

When it comes to the massive world of books and authors, I'm an unknown. But those readers I have reached, rave about my ability to give them page-turning, fast-paced stories with no filler. I've been told I have an ability to create real and identifiable characters, and I pride myself on that. I try very hard to deliver engaging stories with plot twists that will surprise even the most seasoned reader.

Although born in Montreal, Canada, I spent most of my life growing up in the ethnic and cultural melting pot of Southern California. For more than twenty-five years, cities such as Torrance, Redondo Beach, Long Beach, Lakewood, and various parts of Orange County were all places I've called home.

While in California, I spent several years on the music scene, playing guitar and singing with my band in various clubs around the So-Cal and L.A. area. In 2004 when the band dissolved, I shifted gears, turning my talents from writing music to writing books. My first work, a thirty-five thousand word novella, was traditionally published in 2005. With that victory, however, came a bout with depression I tried to cure with prescription drugs and alcohol, which sent me spiraling into one of the lowest lows of my life. In 2009, I battled back and began writing again, releasing my first novel A FORTUNE IN LIES in 2012. With that title, I was signed to Pratt Literary Agency, and Several books have followed every year since.

I currently live in Tennessee with my wife and our son.

This popped up on a cheater FB page. Usually, I love cheater spoilers, but there was something about the blurb that caught my attention enough to avoid the spoilers. And, I’m glad I did. It went where I was expecting, with just enough breadcrumbs to keep my attention.

Vague much? Go into this one blind.

It’s probably only a 3 star story, but I’m kicking it up because I liked how the story unfolded.

Though, weirdly I noticed how often the main character’s name was used, it distracted me enough to check... 881 times.

It didn't take me a day to finish this. I did it in an evening. Once I started, I just couldn't keep myself from staying with it. I was torn up the entire time. Fascinated by David at the same time I wanted to throttle his neck. This is the first book by Jason Carter that I've read and I've already snatched up his other books on Amazon. I was intrigued by the plot and it obviously held me captive.

We know by the premise that while at the airport David is unexpectedly drawn towards a women named Elise. He can't stop himself from following her to the bar and he sets the wheels in motion. Seems like a little innocent flirting but the thoughts running through that man's head...

The story is given to us both in present circumstances and as he reflects on becoming a best selling author, and just what that did to eat away at the relationship he has with his wife Nicole. As he navigates the book signing & interview tour, we learn nothing of his life at home. Just that there is a vast divide in his marriage.

The story is steamy and his desire for Elise was palpable. While I enjoyed the chase, I felt myself getting wound up about David's disregard for his marriage. The romantic in me so wants to see David consider the implications of what he seems determined to do and never thinks about it. The pragmatist in me knows marriages fall a part everyday, all the time, with or without the vow of fidelity being broken. So I read to see just what David would do and my anxiety continued to climb, even though I knew nothing about Nicole, nothing about their marriage, except that they had grown a part. He doesn't reflect on his life at home at all. He's a man obsessed with woman he glanced at and flirted with at an airport bar. Happens all the time, right? But it infuriated me while at the same time the flirting became outrageous and oh so hot. I really didn't think I could ever like David.

And then he surprised me.

In truth, the author does a wonderful job turning my disdain for David around. All I can say is WOW and well done. This was not a good book to read while trying to end the day, doing some reading before falling asleep. That's on me because I know I was looking for some angst. The problem was, I didn't know it would be mine. This is a great read and I wholly recommend it!

I’m a big fan of Jason Carter’s work, so I could not wait to get my hands on The Layover. As a reader who has adored the frantic pace and endless surprises of his other books like Caught in a Web and A Fortune in Lies, I was a little hesitant when I realized that this book was a romance novel. I’m not a big fan of the romance genre, but since this one was written by Jason Carter, I had to give it a shot.

In the opening pages of The Layover, David and Elise meet in an airport terminal and, after a bumpy start, find that they hit it off really well. The problem is that David has a wife at home, and Elise isn’t saying much about who she may have waiting for her. But an airport terminal isn’t exactly real life, and doesn’t everyone want to abandon their lives and responsibilities sometimes?

It didn’t take me long to get sucked into the story, and I found myself loving the chemistry David and Elise shared. I was pleased to find that these characters were multi-faceted, not at all the stereotypical characters I was afraid they’d be, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how they uncovered bits and pieces of each other as the story went on.

I find that I still prefer the exciting, suspenseful books to romance, but this story sucked me in so much that I absolutely recommend it. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another romance story too, should Jason Carter choose to write one!

I read this book a few years back and I have been searching all over so I could re-read it! I finally found it and loved it the second go round too.
I have never read a book that had this concept for a plot, and that says a lot. I have 1000 books on my Nook, almost 600 on my Kindle and I work at a library!
I hated David but loved his wit, then I loved him altogether. How does this happen? Great writing and a kiss $ss plot, that's how. I will be recommending this book to every book group that I belong to.
Thank you Jason for writing a book that made me spend my day not willing to put it down and enjoying a great read. I want to yell it to the world, JUST READ THIS BOOK!!!
