Nice summer reading, for sure. A YA novel, featuring a sexy dominant, a fragile yet sassy submissive and some quite interesting supportive characters. It's an amusing pick if you're not searching to deepen about D/s relationships and one could learn some useful tip while reading it, such as:
I) While backpacking through Europe is definitively a nice choice for gaining self assurance and wordly experience, I would strongly advise against settling in a substitute-mom's Aristocratic Castle because, frankly, you might as well order a pack of diapers because it clearly shows you hold a baby who need to be nurtured attitude;
II) I believe there is a basic dicotomy concerning sensual spanking and disciplinary ones and the novel should make it more clear, given 'new' BDSM practioneurs may get confused and end up landing in a troublesome domestic abuse reality instead;
III) It's okay to be attracted to literary alpha males (specially because 'real life' men are seldom willing to get out of their ways to offer us any support) but, seriously, why does the clichée of love at first sight and surrender within five minutes of acquaintance is so worldwide spread in romantic novels?!
So, congrats to Carol Storm on her quick deliverings of entertaining novels but there is so much potential in her I wish I could read more out of the described context! Thank you Carol and do not retire your pen just yet!
Well, that depends on a much bigger question: what does escape mean for you?
If you're like me, you've always had a secret weakness for the Cinderella fantasy. I mean, there you are, nineteen years old and in a foreign country, backpacking along in scuffed boots and a ragged pair of Levi's, and just then -- whoosh!
You see, if you're a single girl in London, luck doesn't always come in the form of a glass slipper. Sometimes luck is a splash of mud from a passing bus.
For Charity Hill -- eager, impulsive, outspoken, crazy about having fun adventures -- getting splashed with mud leads right to being picked up by the ultimate Fairy Godmother. Lady Edith Edgewell-Beddington, who's not only gorgeous but fabulously wealthy and well-connected, and who immediately takes the bedgraggled little runaway under her wing.
Wonderful things like that don't often happen in the real world. But in my books, that's how life is!
So if you're Charity, the heroine of my new book, and you think you've got it made, right? Sleeping at Lady Beddington's, meeting all sorts of classy people, learning to be a proper lady? Well, sure, but there's a catch.
That would be Harry, Lady Beddington's darkly gorgeous nephew. Who's a billionaire, by the way. Harry is the catch because he doesn't quite approve of his beloved auntie's new reclamation project. Harry is also the catch because . . . well, he's the catch! The ultimate, mouth-watering catch of the day. Charity takes one look at him and she just knows she's got to have him!
But Harry is a bit old-fashioned. As in, he expects his wild American runaway to talk and act like a proper lady at all times. To exercise discipline and self-control and be a real grownup. So even though he adores his new redheaded girlfriend, every time Charity forgets her table manners, or ignores the alarm clock, and turns up late for a date, or just generally behaves like the fresh, impulsive nineteen year old she is, well . . . Harry needs to give her a very stern bit of old-fashion discipline, right on the seat of her trousers!
BURNING INNOCENCE is just the first book in a three book series that will chart the ongoing adventures of Miss Charity Hill. Can a rumpled-looking redhead from America really fit in to posh London society? Can a girl who always follows her heart learn to use her head as well? Can a heroine who loves breakfast in bed and sleeping past noon ever learn to be an early bird?
Stay tuned for the next thrilling installment of THE CHARITY CHRONICLES!
This was kinda cute it has potential. But it felt like I walked in to a movie late and missed 20 minutes. Also it felt unfinished. I also feel like Harry and Charity's relationship started a bit faster than it should. I was also confused a time or two.
I enjoyed every aspect of this book. Charity is an impulsive young American girl trying to fit in to English high society. This includes a well-respected, rich, motherly mentor, her self-serving unscrupulous rival, and her authoritarian head of household nephew with a mysterious history of relationships. Charity finds herself a pawn in an unfamiliar game of intrigue, money, and fight for control, and I love the way she handles herself. Of course, her romance with the handsome nephew and her inner emotional conflict are the underlying theme throughout. The author added just the right amount of mystery to keep me hooked and I read the book in one sitting. I do agree with the reviewers who said the book could have been longer.
FINDING A PURPOSE This story is a bit mystery and romance. Charity Hill, American, is taken in by Lady Edith Edgewell-Beddington, a former friend of her English mother. Lady Beddington's nephew, Harry Edgewell is back in the UK from being in New York, he is a billionaire with old fashioned attitude and ways of dealing with issues. Lady Margaret Carlton, is new money but tries to exert her power over people. This is a new series, with a large cast of characters. The plot twist keeps you trying to figure out who is really telling the truth and who is the wolf in sheep's clothing.
3 ½ - 4 stars I really got into this story. It was a cheeky British spanking and love story. The spankings were light by hand. What I didn’t like was the way the story Just kind of ended. It didn’t seem like it was complete. It just ended. There was so much more to be said and ends tied up. It ended on a philosophical note, but again I would have been happy for more. It was still a good read. Just short. I guess we wait for book two to finish up the rest.
Oooh, sexy! But oh so innocent too. Charity made me laugh, and I was so drooling over Harry, the hero. And I wish Lady Beddington could be my fairy godmother!
‘Burning Innocence’ characterized many of the things that I love about Carol Storm’s writing. It was fun, lively, and packed with exciting scenes; all making for a delightful story. In what I hope will become a series, Carol Storm introduces us to Charity Hill, a feisty young girl who has come to England under the wing of rich and sophisticated Lady Beddington. She soon becomes enthralled with Lady Beddington’s handsome nephew, Harry, and together, they work to defend the generous woman against the conniving claims of rival, Lady Margaret. Along the way, Charity copes with her own developing maturity, her feelings and relationship with Harry, and jealousy over a mysterious, beautiful girl linked with Harry’s past. The centre of this story is lovely, cheerful Charity Hill. She made a wonderful protagonist and one of my favourite aspects of the novella was seeing her grow up throughout, and forge her own independence. Even though she was often working alongside Harry, she still had the opportunity to be her own woman and I enjoyed reading the story ‘through her eyes’. The way she interacted with other characters was particularly nice – I personally loved the sections of the book set at the Oakdale Arms, a luxurious residence home where she does some ‘undercover’ work for Harry and Lady Beddington. This sweetness was only one side of Charity’s character though, and I also liked the spirited nature Carol Storm gave her, especially during her conflicts with Lady Margaret. Lady Margaret, herself, was an interesting character as well, a fierce, strong-willed lady who didn’t let anything get in her way – although she wasn’t physically in the book for many scenes, she still seemed to be everywhere, dominating people’s thoughts! Lady Beddington was a great contrast to her but even she had an enigmatic edge to her. Harry was also a brilliant male lead and the tension between him and Charity was delicious. They were a great duo, both in solving the problems faced by Lady Beddington, and in a romantic sense as well. The pace and mood of this book were lovely too. It was energetic and bouncy but also charmingly languid at times, reflecting Charity’s own character. The mood of it was always quite playful, yet with a strong plotline and lots of drama to keep it going. The politics and competition between Lady Margaret and Harry and Charity was another particularly interesting feature, and provided a great backdrop to the story. Amongst all this, Charity and Harry’s romance was very sweet too. All together, this novella was very enjoyable. It was bubbly, endearing and vivacious and really engaging. I hope to read more of Charity’s entertaining adventures! An amusing read!
