An interesting read for the explorers visiting Sikkim and North Bengal, and the researchers doing research on the South Asian Rivers.
In book "And the Teesta Flows..." the authors Samita Chaudhuri and Utpal Chaudhuri take an ethnographic journey alongside the Teesta River from its origin till its confluence with the river Brahmaputra at Rangpur division in Bangladesh. The Teesta River starts its journey from the magnificent lake Tso Lhamo in North Sikkim. Then it flows across Sikkim state, then enters into West Bengal and joins with Brahmaputra in Bangladesh. The authors took a series of discrete journeys for more than eight years between 2006 and 2014 to discover picturesque valleys and natural beauties across the river basin of Teesta. Through their lenses and narratives, the authors discovered the communities worshiping the Mother Nature, and wonderful floras and faunas in the region. To the authors’ imagination, Teesta River emerges as a growing girl in its early avatar in Sikkim, and then transformed into a lady in North Bengal and flows further to Bangladesh. Thus, the authors connect peoples of Sikkim, West Bengal's Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Coochbehar districts, and Bangladesh's Rangpur division. Their lives are centered on the Teesta river, similar to any other river-centric civilization. This book contains mainly three chapters, namely, (i) Birth of the Teesta, (ii) The Growing Girl, and (iii) The Lady. This book includes a foreword by novelist Kunal Basu. The book offers a photo-documentation style of presentation with many anecdotes and the authors' insightful observations on peoples and nature. This is an interesting read for the explorers visiting Sikkim and North Bengal, and the researchers doing research on the South Asian rivers.
