SEE OUR PHOTOS! This 271-page hardcover was published in 1930 by Minton, Balch & Company (1st edition). This volume appears to be unread; pages are crisp and pristine. Clippings from the dustcover have been attached to the inside cover. The black hardcover looks very nice, with sharp edges and corners, with minor wear on the front cover, and some fading on the spine. The binding is like new. Overall, a very nice conditioned volume. Please see our 3 photos of this volume.
Parkes wrote before the great developments in both Edwards and NE Puritanism studies. He writes beautifully and at times attempts to maintain a studied neutrality about Edwards. But his disdain shines through in his unwillingness to understand Edwards’ beliefs on their own terms. The author views Edwards’ influence as an “infection” that caused damage to NE and America more broadly. He cannot conceive of belief in hell as anything more than hateful towards humanity, and clearly sees warning people of hell as a sort of theological terrorism. He steadfastly refuses to see the Bible as holding any influence over theological debates of the time—everything is presented as different theologians pursuing their own agendas, much like a secular philosopher (only more petty). If you want to see how offensive and foolish Christian faith and submission to the Bible appears to an articulate outsider, look no further. If you want to learn about Edwards’ life and doctrine, pick up Iain Murray or George Marsden.
