I first read this book 50 years ago, when I was a teenager. Some of the marginal notes and underlines date back to that reading. At that time, the topic seemed like ancient history; people "back then" certainly lacked the understanding of religious toleration that was now obvious to us all.

Reading the book now, I feel like it's describing the present, all around the world. Tensions that were more hidden (at least to me) in the 1970s have moved to center stage. Debates that raged hundreds of years ago are raging again. I have to convince myself anew that Christianity is more of a blessing than a curse to humanity. Very sobering.
