I love these "Wild Bird Guides" from Stackpole. Each details the life history of a single species. Each is also full of color photos.

I write a nature column in one of the local newspapers. The bird I get the most questions about is the ruby-throated hummingbird, America's tiniest bird, little dynamos almost too amazing to be real. Talk about living life in the fast lane! If I can answer the reader's question great, if not, I consult Sargent’s book, because he IS the expert.
