The countdown to me completing (as far as I can do) my Papertiger/dragons world collection is continuing with one of the titles I thought I would never own - Dan Dare Pilot of the Future was something I remember from my childhood (no I am old not that old) and reading the annuals and specials my friends had.
These 1970s editions were revisited and updated (as explained in the books forward) to fit the format and remove the logos. In the process the artwork was printed on superior paper and boy does the quality show. The detail that goes in to each panel is amazing and to think this was from a regular comic book - the work that went in to it is astounding.
Now I will admit that I enjoyed the read but the book itself is what made it for me - even the smell of the book brings back memories (come on admit it who hasn't smelt a book). Now I just need to track down the other two volumes
The Dan Dare stories originally appeared in a British comic book called Eagle Comics in the 1950s. In the 1980s famous art house publisher, Dragon's Dream, created a three volume set of large format Dan Dare books with restored artwork printed on heavy paper stock. In some cases, the original artist restored or re-created panels for this edition that were obscured with logo overlays in the original comic.
The story involves Dan Dare, a British Buck Rogers / Flash Gordon like character who is widely know for his daring good deeds. A peaceful alien race endangered by an invasion of war-like enemies comes to Earth seeking Dare's help. "The Man from Nowhere" follows the story up to the point Dare and his team arrive on the alien planet.
It's an entertaining read and the artwork is well above average. The books are long out of print but can occasionally be found on eBay or in used book stores. Recommended if you can find them.
