Family Letters and Notes A Year of Challenge in Guinea 1966 — 1967 An announcement appeared in one of the architectural magazines to which we subscribed stating that applications for a Fulbright Lectureship were being taken for the position of Professor at the University of Guinea in Conakry, West Africa. Requirements: French language fluency, teaching experience, a knowledge of tropical building requirements, previous foreign travel and/or living experience, knowledge of city planning, married, able to cope with primitive living conditions, presently employed as an architect. There were 36 applicants. Jean Wells Hastings was chosen. He was flown to Washington, D.C. for interviews, and met by a French national (in government employ) who took him to lunch and with whom conversation was in French. Afterward JWH was told that that lunch was the test of his French fluency. There were other interviews re: personality, adaptability (being unexpectedly introduced to very important people—checking poise, manners, conversational ability, diplomacy, etc.), questions regarding his wife and her abilities, etc. This book is a compilation of letters about their experiences in Guinea, written by Jean and Marian Hastings.
