Originally bred in Japan, this large dog is generally alert, good-natured, affectionate, and a loyal companion to its owner. However, many Akitas have a stubborn streak and need firm training from puppyhood. Barron's Pet Owner's Manual provides everything a prospective owner needs to know about the breed, including recommendations for feeding, exercise, training, grooming, and more. Full-color photos.
As a long time Akita owner, and someone with experience in dog shows and training with Akitas, I found this book to be very informative, especially in regard to the history of the breed and the temperament. I appreciate that the author is blunt and clear about some of the more difficult aspects of the breed and hope that anyone interested in possibly owning an Akita will read this and take it to heart. It is an older book, so some of the information is a bit outdated, but still useful. It is one of the better Akita breed books I own, particularly for its small size. This book was written before the official breed spilt, so there are photos of Akita-Inu, but the book is about the Akita (American Akita for those outside the USA).
