This was the most amazing book, beautiful writing. Story really about imprisonment for so many of the characters, who had either purposely or through honour put themselves in to a place they would rather not be. The strength of the characters in the book was unfailing, and with so many twists and turns of the plot along the way kept once interested and learning all at the same time. The strength of love shown through so much in this book, and what people will do for love. The book will stay with me for a very long time, l just adored it.

a nice & intensely researched book. i liked the writing at times but then many times i didnt . including the time skips, the slowness despite short chapters, a disconnect between the details and their effects, & it was hard to connect to the characters a LOT . maybe bc of the narrator's voice. but as far as historical fictions go i liked it decently

It's not often I pick up a Pulitzer prize winner and am unable to put it down. Such prizes these days seem to go to voluminous tomes that tire both the brain and the arms. But I enjoyed every word of this magnificent novel. The lives of the two protagonists are so very different, on either side of the fence during the second world war, and yet Doerr is so talented at carefully exposing the vulnerabilities of both courageous young people. Their eventual meeting is inevitable from the outset, but this in itself is crafted to a careful precision. Marie-Laure has been blind since early childhood. Doerr describes her world so well, one would think he is sightless himself. The sensations, smells and sounds are so poetically conveyed. Werner is a young German orphan whose passion for science and technology undoubtedly protects him from some of the horrors of the Hitler Youth. Both characters end up in the Breton walled town of St.Malo, under siege. I shall say no more or there will be spoilers. I didn't want the book to end. A must read.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I like the subject matter and the characters. I like the way it is written---short chapters. The characters are well delineated. The two main characters are separated by geographical space throughout most of the book even though their stories are running parallel in every other chapter. I almost did not want this book to end. I wanted very badly for the two lives to intersect somewhere in the story!! And they did---only to separate again! It is a beautiful story, a sad story, and yet very uplifting.
