Just looking again at my 1988 edition and making the assumption that today most people would simply do a search online if they came across a statistical term they didn't understand or wanted information on a technique of which they were unsure. Going back to 1988, however, this was a reassuring and accessible (i.e., easily portable) little book for anyone doing sociological research (or, indeed, any form of statistical research). In places the maths can look pretty intimating ... I jest, the maths can look terrifying ... Porkess' writing is accessible and will help put you at your ease as you attempt to translate your figures into something meaningful and capable of explaining what it is you've been looking at. Good little book and something you might want to keep on a shelf for ready reference ... and maybe even some stimulating ideas about how to handle your figures more accurately ... but, as I say, most people will now settle for an online search.
