Nineteen-year-old Claire MacDougal prides herself on being sexy, independent, and noncommittal. She shows off what her mother gave her in a scantily clad uniform, getting big tips at the restaurant where she works. Then, she encounters an old classmate with educational ambitions who invites her to his church, and she finds herself falling for him despite the fact that they come from two different worlds. Stuart Jacobs had always had feelings for Claire in high school, but never pursued her because his extracurricular activities would not permit him the time to have a relationship…nor was he her ideal. Now his mother is adamant on him meeting and pursuing a relationship with the daughter of a highly esteemed mayoral candidate, but after running into Claire after graduation, he sees it as fate and will stop at nothing to be with her. However, when he finds himself competing with a friend for her attention, she becomes the talk of every concerned mother at Renewal Baptist Church. Meanwhile, Cecelia Faulks, First Lady of Renewal, is dedicating her summer to instilling faith and wisdom into a group of young adults, all while trying to keep the church and her marriage together with a smile. Cecelia sees the bond forming between Claire and Stuart and tries to talk down the bad rumors swirling about her, but when the rumors are confirmed, will it be too late to change for the girl who was all about her thighs?
First off, who the heck proofread this? Get your money back! They did a horrible job! Why is everyone a stereotype? Especially the church folks? NOT your biggest fan!
Overall this really was a good read. I just felt like the author was giving too much detail regarding the other characters. It seemed like I was reading two books in one; Clare and Stuart’s love story then Mr. and Mrs. Faulks drama. I’m sure I would’ve enjoyed both stories had they been their own entities but overall this is a good read.
This is the first book that I've read by this author but it won't be the last. This is one of the best books that I've read about "church folks". It was not a typical church bashing book. It showed church folks as they really are. The author knew her folks, church and otherwise.
Some of characters in this book were fully developed. Others made you want to know them. The people described were members of the church. They could have been people I know from the church that I attend. Stuart and Claire were the main characters and typical seniors getting ready to graduate high school. I thought they acted more like college students. Stuart was your typical all around popular student, basketball player, A student and good church young man. Claire was atypical, the true bad girl. She said what she meant and meant what she said. First Lady Cecelia Faulks could have been the star of the book. She was married to the Pastor of a large church where the members didn't remember that he was the Pastor, not the Master. She was true, forgiving Christian who played the role of the first lady well. Although there was nothing typical about her. When she had enough, she had enough. Her husband, the Pastor, was an immoral adulterer among other things.
The other characters were kids you meet every day who could be friends of your family. They are loving, funny and honest. Some of their parents ran the gamut as church folks do. They forget they were once just like their children. They were boougie, hypocritical, immoral, unloving and all of the things fake Christians, as well as other folks, were. Others were wise, forgiving and accepting of their children's friends. Some, when confronted with their hypocrisy repented while others' doubled down.
There were quite a few grammatical errors. You immediately got into the book and were sailing along and BAM, an error jumped out at you. They were obvious errors that should have been caught by an editor. Still, they weren't as bad as in some books that I've read though, that's no excuse. Hopefully , that problem will be corrected in the next book. I'm not so invested in the author that I'll purchase her books if they're full of grammatical errors. That aside, this was once of the best books that read about "church folks" like me, my friends and family.
For some reason unbeknownst to me I really liked this book. I'm not generally a fan of urban novels because the grammar is always horrible and the story line never makes sense, but this one was an awesome exception. The story intertwines the lives of nearly a dozen characters yet you're able to understand what's going on. It begins with Claire, who has been nicknamed "Thighs" by her high school peers. She's self described as a 'round the way girl. Which means that she's a no nonsense, do want you want type of person. She's itching to move out of her father's house where he and her brother cannot fend for themselves and depend on her to do the housework. Stuart plays Claire's eventual love interest. They are complete opposites, where Claire it dipping her foot into community college, Stuart is well on his way to being the next black president. Then there's Ms. Cecilia, the pastors wife and first lady of Renewal Church. Church members put her on the highest pedestal and watch her and her husband as if they were the highest hierarchy. Their stories intertwine with the realizations of self-love, breaking free from expectations, and leaving emotional abuse behind. Although there was a lot of grammar related typos, and the story line wasn't perfect, I thought it was very entertaining.

"All About Her Thighs" by Lola Beverly Hills
My Thoughts....
What a read that will definitely keep your attention will all of the various storylines that are presented. Be aware that these are a lots of things that happened in the story go on in today's society as well as 'the church.' We have a little bit of it all from a waitress whose family don't care about her, church mom wanting her son to date a particular type of girl, sexual abuse, adultery premarital sex, love story, cheating preacher not only with the single ladies but turns out to have been a pedophile. Be prepared for many surprises and twist and turns in this story.
I enjoyed how this author gives the reader quite a spectrum of what can happen to the good and the worst of what can happen with church folk. I found the characters for the most part well developed, believable and even repairable where the story 'teaches faith based principles as well as dealing with real life issues.'
It took me a couple of days to read this, you know. Life happens. I will say that I very much so enjoyed this book. I hollered when Janet took charge and got the courage to "stand up"! Coming from someone who has began her search for a good church home, this makes you wonder if things like this happen in real life; im sure it does.
I will say there were times I would have to go back and reread certain paragraphs and sentences because their were either words missing, or a few typos or grammatical errors. One of the reasons why I gave my 4 star rating. At other times I felt like events that took place were a bit rushed. I would have to go back and reread a paragraph to make sure I didnt miss anything.
I downloaded this book on my kindle by searching through new adult titles, tis how I received this book. Overall great read. I would recommend this author as well as this book to others.
It was one of the slower paced books that I've read. It took way too long for the story to be interesting enough to finish reading. I almost didn't finish it, but I have this need to finish every book I read at least by the end. There were places in this book where it was obvious the writer was pushing her religious beliefs, so much so that it detracted from the books readability. It's understandable that a writer would want to spread her message, but it shouldn't come at the expense of sacrificing the story. Additionally, the book is supposedly about Claire and her life, but the book mainly focuses on the actions of the churchgoers. The subplot became the main plot.
urban setting, hip hop language Main character has a strong work ethic. opposite of body shaming-- she has pride in her appearance. Her beauty/attitude is rewarded when she become a major model. issue of church leaders not following the edicts of church and how behavior is revealed and punished enjoyed the characters. Would recommend to any 8th grader and above.
I enjoyed the story. It kept me engaged from start to finish. The storyline was believable, characters relatable. I especially identified with Claire. Can't wait to get the next installment. My only criticism is the editing....could have been more thorough.
I enjoyed this book. It was an easy ready with a lot of topics not easily discussed. It had the church without being overbearing, the ghetto without being stereotypical and real family/community drama. It’s a little something for everyone. It has a love story amount everything else.
The story line was quite predictable. The author's writing was ok. I somehow was not able to connect to any character, hence the rating. But good book otherwise.
This was a truly amazing story from beginning to end. This is one of those novels that you walk around with because you can't put it down. A very good book.
I almost messed up with this book. I originally had it as a book club suggestion for my Church women's group. NO!!!!!!!!! Luckily, I scanned the book first. Though none of the language is out right filthy by my standards there are some discussions and situations that may be a little strong. The ironic thing about that is the book is centered around a church and its members specifically its young adults and focuses on how they are dealing with life and their spirituality. I really enjoyed it and think it is a worthy read.
