Say It With Quilts is both a celebration of, and a manual for, one of a quilter’s greatest joys. That is: making a quilt for, or in memory of, a special person. The authors tell touching personal stories about the love, thoughts and care sewn into each of the 22 beautifully-photographed quilts. The recipients range from a grandchild to a great-grandpa, so there is much variety in style and design. Finally, Diana and Laura offer their Alphabet Sampler quilt – 26 pieced 6-inch letter blocks, each with its appropriately matched companion. As with any sampler, these blocks involve both piecing and appliqué and vary in difficulty. Some are pictorial (A= Apple, H=Heart) and some are named quilt-blocks (L=Log Cabin, W=Whirlwind). Altogether, there are over 70 different block patterns in this book - definitely a very useful resource. The instructions are clear, but I think would need some experience to follow easily. All required templates are given full-size. The techniques section is well-done and referenced to the individual instructions, but with very little mention of the quilting stage. If you have on your quilting agenda a quilt for or about a special person, Diana and Laura have many ideas to help you focus and create.
