Hutt Describes Houses

Hutt's book contains a very readable, concise history of Goa, that lovely, formerly Portuguese region on India's west coast. There are a large number of good photographs, both in color and in black and white, with accompanying descriptions of various architectural monuments left by Hindu kingdoms, Muslim rulers, and the Portuguese Catholics who stayed in Goa for 451 years, leaving only in 1961. Houses built by the wealthy Goan landowners are also described in detail.. Published posthumously in 1988, the book also served as a guide to the temples, churches, beaches, and many villages of Goa. Unfortunately, time has not served that little state well and a wave of tourists and developers has swamped much of the beauty described by Hutt in this offering. The "idyllic beaches" have deteriorated badly, a lot of land alienated from the Goans themselves. Still, if you want to read a short history and know how Goa used to be three decades ago, you could do much worse than get hold of this book.
