The building of the new Forth Road Bridge is bringing excitement to the small community of North Queensferry.
But not everyone is welcoming its arrival. Nancy, mother to Matt and Lorna, worries about her children all the time but Matt’s new job working on the bridge makes her even more uneasy and family tensions rise when Lorna becomes aloof and difficult to speak to.
Nancy’s worries are confirmed when Lorna lies about where staying at a friend’s whilst really staying at her new boyfriend’s. Is Pete bad news? Or should she learn to trust Lorna’s judgment?
Meanwhile, Nancy’s two lodgers, Shona and Walter - who has been working on the new bridge - slowly begin to realise that they have more in common than they initially thought… Will Walter capture Miss McAllister’s heart? Or could it be stolen by the smooth and mysterious Mark before he even gets a chance?
'A moving, page-turning book that kept me gripped' - Robert Foster, best-selling author of The Lunar Code
Anne Forsyth is a Scottish writer. She worked as a newspaper reporter, a sub-editor on a woman's magazine, and then as an overseas and managing editor in educational publishing. Her writing developed from adapting favourite Celtic tales and legends for overseas markets, into writing original stories for children. She has twenty-two published books to her name, including The Far Horizon.
Imagine you a suddenly plopped down into a Scottish family 's home in 1963, that also happens to be a B&B. The characters are charming and spring to life. There are 16 chapters in this book, not the 4 pages that kindle says (not sure what that is all about). I enjoyed the motherly matriarch of the family, a warn character always feeding folks or giving someone tea. Short and sweet read.
Probably just under a 3. A short story set in Scotland in the early 1960s with the background (quite literally) of the construction of the Forth Road Bridge - both elements were enough to rope me in. A gently little story of a local family, their friends, boarders and family. Light but enjoyable and everyone lives happily ever after!
Old days values and rules, parents and adult children come together to build a bridge or watch it being built nearby. The lives weave together, the people take on dimension, the bridge and relationships are worked on until they come to fruition.
So, the author is getting a lack of credit for her work. It shows that this a 4 page book under the kindle detail. I got it out of curiosity when it was on the freebie list but can tell you it is longer. I don't know how to check that but I would guess around 70-100 pages. It is a story about Nancy and Joe who run a B&B. Joe runs the ferries and their son Matt is training to be a welder on the bridge. One of their guest is actually behind the overseeing of the bridge. His name is Walter Logan. They also have a daughter named Lorna and another boy named Roy. The idea behind the book is how the construction of the bridge brought together the B&B patrons and what effect progress came with it.
It is based in Scotland in the 60's and you have a school teacher who lives at the B&B but is dating quite recently. Shona McAllister is shy but thanks to her new boyfriend her confidence has increased. She is at odds to start out with Walter. The tension between them is short lived but attention on them is shadowed by Lorna and her new spark Pete. The story bounces back and forth between all the couples so it's not really in depth with the romance. It is sort of like the movie Love Actually where each couple has their issues and by the end each couple gets their HEA.
This is a clean read with very few spelling or grammar issues. There is also an excerpt to the authors next book The Far Horizon. This book too reads to be only five pages but I can tell you the excerpt alone was already beyond the five pages. Whatever the glitch is I hope it gets worked out for the author because I believe that is why there are no other reviews besides mine. People do not want to waste their time or money on what they think is only 4 pages. I would have liked the focus to have been on just one couple especially with the length but I did enjoy the book. I don't think this is a bad start for the author. Enjoy!
