Jinwon Hyun is a carefree and outgoing high school student. He is a great dancer and has a pretty girlfriend. One day, however, he notices that someone is constantly staring at him. He finds out it's none other than a classmate named Hosoo---who has a girlfriend of his own---and Jinwon is faced with a very strange and worrisome dilemma. The two boys find themselves gradually becoming attracted to each other's songs and hopes. This subtle shonen-ai story of love, pain, and youthful angst will break readers' hearts and leave them totally infatuated with Yeri Na and her characters.
Hmm. :/ So when this first came out I really loved it, and was super disappointed when netcomics dropped it after 3 volumes. I just recently discovered all 7 volumes are available on kindle, and successfully made myself reread this one instead of just impulse buying all of them. But now I'm like, eh?
There's a lot in favor of these. The art is classic BL, the sweet UST and deluded jealousy.
On the uhh, eww, <.< side:
- They're both wannabe pop idols. - The self-delusion*
*There's a tiny hint of cute here in a closeted situtation, or in the very young, and these are high school kids so maybe they could get away with it if it weren't for the fact that everyone around them thinks they're obsessed with each other and jokes about them getting married or in the case of Jinwon's parents seem to object to them having anything to do with each other. I just can't with characters who are so self-ignorant that they can't recognize their own feelings as romantic attraction when it seems obvious to everyone around them. (That's how I read things anyway.)
In the undecided category, this isn't just pure inocent astro boy world stuff, there's some dark here. Emotionally and physically abusive family members and teachers, bullies, etc. It's nothing on the order of Let Dai, best ever series that I can not make myself finish reading because it just feels so doomed, but it's definitely a mixed bag of sweet and bitter. On balance I think that's probably a net positive, but with a few exceptions like Let Dai, my BL/yaoi preferences tend toward the sweet inocent disney type stuff.
I think I'm going to have to reread more of these before deciding whether or not to buy vols 4-7.
This is a review and rating of the whole series. I am giving it a 3.5 stars...
...because I like the art style and it's a pleasure to feast my eyes on all the bishonen in the manga. Yummy! I also enjoyed the storyline and the lively characters. The mangaka likes to dress up her characters. It's like they are modeling in front of me. And they even have the looks to match. Lots of eye-candies. What fun!
It is pretty engrossing drama with lots of rama but it didn't end how I wish it would. In fact I believe many readers would feel the same like me. Kinda sad and disappointed with Jinwoon and Hosoon's closure. That's life I guess. Not everything would go the way we wanted it to be. So in a way this story favors realism and the author does not believe in handing out rose-colored glasses to her readers. I respect that.
Although this is a shoujo manga and is not a yaoi manga, there are quite a lot of fanservices for yaoi fans. There are much suggestive homoerotic behaviors amongst the boys. Well actually, one of the boys (not that two main characters) did have obvious attraction to his long time friend which was not reciprocated at all. And a couple of the adults are either gay or bisexual. As for the two main characters, they shown clear attraction to girls and one even have a girlfriend. Although their bromance is very VERY deep. So deep that you think they would take it on to the next level. That is what I was hoping for of course. I am guilty of that. I know. Not a surprise here since I am a die-hard yaoi/gay stories reader.
Jinwoon and Hosoon looked so good together. They are also quite intimate with each other. I really like that.
The story is very disjointed. The set up is that Jinwon and Hosoo want to be singers together, but you never see them practicing or even singing together. Why make that the premise of your story if you're not going to use it?
