From Basement to Balcony: An Underdog Story About Risk, Resilience, and Reinvention
He slept in jail cells.
Built businesses from nothing.
Became a convicted felon in two countries.
Started a clothing brand with $300.
Helped launch a nationally recognized restaurant on Discovery Channel’s Undercover Billionaire.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it…
lost himself.
In From Basement to Balcony, RJ Messenger tells the unfiltered story behind the success people thought they knew. From violence, addiction to chaos, failed relationships, underground crews, entrepreneurship, and sudden national attention, RJ walks readers through the highs and lows of building Iron Empire Clothing and becoming one of the standout personalities from Undercover Billionaire alongside Glenn Stearns.
But this isn’t a business book.
And it isn’t a polished success story.
It’s a raw look at what happens when someone spends years chasing success without ever learning how to slow down long enough to heal.
Told in the same fast-paced, conversational style RJ speaks in real life, From Basement to Balcony feels less like reading a traditional memoir and more like sitting across from someone finally telling the whole truth.
About failure.
About self-destruction.
About mental health.
About rebuilding.
And about learning that sometimes the hardest thing a person can do… is walk away from the thing they built.
This is not a story about becoming perfect.
It’s a story about becoming honest.

As someone who grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, I was always aware of who RJ Messenger was and followed his journey from afar after moving to Florida. I continued supporting Iron Empire online (pretty sure my middle daughter owns at least 20 Iron Empire shirts) and was excited when the television show premiered, my kids and I watched every episode. Like many others, I often wondered how he managed to build a successful business, inspire others, and seemingly do it all at once.
From Basement to Balcony answers those questions in a way that is both powerful and deeply personal. RJ shares his story with remarkable honesty, opening up about the struggles, setbacks, and lessons that shaped his path. His willingness to be vulnerable makes the book relatable and authentic, while his perseverance and faith make it inspiring.
What stood out most to me was how the book manages to be brave, open, and honest while also being comforting. It’s a reminder that success is rarely a straight line and that even the people we admire have faced challenges, doubts, and difficult seasons. Whether you’ve followed RJ’s journey for years or are just discovering his story, this book offers encouragement, perspective, and hope.
I highly recommend From Basement to Balcony to anyone looking for a genuine story of resilience, faith, and determination.

This book demands attention from the start, pulling readers into a world where ambition cuts both ways and success is far from polished.
At its core, it’s about grit—not the romantic kind, but the kind forged through doubt, pressure, and persistence. The author doesn’t shy away from showing that strength can be messy and born out of necessity.
What stands out is the honesty. There’s no glossing over failure or the cost of success. The tension between public image and private struggle—burnout, identity loss, and expectation—drives the narrative.
While the highs are impactful, it’s the lows that resonate most. The setbacks and moments of doubt raise a central question: What is success worth if you lose yourself along the way?
The book also explores the challenge of balance, offering no easy answers—only the reality that staying true to yourself often comes at a price.
Ultimately, it’s a powerful reflection on ambition and identity, leaving readers to consider not just what they’re chasing, but who they’re becoming.
Raw and honest, it lingers long after the final page.
