Joya Rae Martin doesn’t have time for fairy tales. A brilliant scientist from Chicago, she has built her future around one saving her father from a rare and devastating disease.
Then a trip to New York changes everything.
After witnessing a supernatural battle in Central Park, Joya comes face-to-face with demons, witches, vampires, shifters, and dragons. But nothing shakes her more than Prince Xavian Draegonhart, the powerful dragon who drops to his knees and calls her his mate.
Xavian has waited decades for the mate The Mother made for him. Joya is his future, his flamebound love, but she isn’t a woman to be claimed by pretty words or ancient bonds. If he wants her trust, he’ll have to earn it. Because Xavian may be a dragon prince, but Joya is no damsel waiting to be saved.
When the truth about her father’s illness leads them to a hidden enemy with roots older than anyone imagined, Joya must use her science to confront a horror built on control, corruption, and stolen power. And Xavian will burn down anything that stands between his mate and the family she’s trying to save.
Flamebound is a spicy Black romantasy set in the Protector’s Claim Universe, featuring a possessive dragon prince, fated mates, dragonfire, supernatural secrets, family healing, and a love hot enough to rewrite everything.
Let's start with what an excellent name Joya is for this character. I have a cousin named Joy, and I've always loved that name for her. I'm drawn to this story because it showcases a Black girl's determination regardless of her circumstances, and celebrates the single parent who poured so much love and support into her. She remained steadfast in her convictions despite her environment. Through her talent and compassion, she brought joy to everyone around her. Especially to her mate. Great read for me, Renee G.
September!!! Xavian and Joya was worth the wait! Once I started, I couldn't put it down! Great job tying in the scientific/tech world in human and superhuman. I can wait for the next book! The plot, the spice, the action, the banter! 10 out of 10!
Per usual, don't let the cover fool you—the spice is definitely spicy, but you'll also find a good mix of fantasy, science, and social commentary.
If you're new here, The Mother doesn't make mistakes. Humans and supernaturals typically aren't fated mates, but she's shaking things up, and what she says goes. We were first introduced to Xavian and his possible mate rejection in his mother's story (Xolani's Second Flame), so I was excited for his journey, and it didn't disappoint!
Joya is a Black woman in STEM who has dedicated her life to finding a cure for her chronically ill father, all while being thrust into a world she didn't even know existed. I loved watching her research and Xavi's dragon technology intersect throughout the story. Their dynamic was one of my favorite parts. Even though Xavi is a powerful dragon shifter and tech guru, he treated Joya as an equal—and honestly, she wouldn't have accepted anything less. Her intelligence, education, passion, and determination were just as important to the story as his strength and abilities.
What really grabbed my attention were the twists and the larger themes woven throughout the story. The exploration of power, racism, religious extremism, and the exploitation of Black bodies added depth to the worldbuilding and felt especially impactful because of the real-world historical parallels.
And Preston? Every time I learned more about that man, I got angrier. The audacity, entitlement, and fragility of his ego need to be studied. A truly top-tier hater whose actions had consequences far beyond himself.
Because the story leans heavily into science and technology, there were a few moments where these two nerds had me wandering into the weeds. But overall, I had a good time in Draegonland—aka Wakanda with dragons. 🐉😈
This is my first read by this author, and I'll definitely check out more of her catalog because I love the world that she created, but I think that this book didn't get a higher rating from me because I wanted more romantic interaction between Xavian and Joya. And I understand that she had a lot going on; she just learned about supernatural beings, her father's illness, and there was a whole conspiracy happening, but to me it seemed like she only gave into the bond on a superficial sexual level. Xavian kind of seemed like her bonded sexual partner that worshipped her, and she was mildly fond of him, not a romantic equal she truly loved.
This author has ALWAYS pulled you in and make you feel and understand the surroundings of the story. This one makes you want to be apart of The Protectors… But more importantly apart of the supernatural world and you’ll absolutely love every part of it even the battles that they have to face. Because even the battles you know what you’re fighting for and you want to be apart of it. Absolutely loved this one as all the others by this author…. Keep writing and I’ll definitely keep reading!!! Can’t wait for the next one…
I am so glad 😌 September Knight did not scrap this part of Flamebound. This was such a good read. This book 📕 actually showed me how you can live a simple life with your family and someone can look 👀 into your life and be so jealous that they put that JuJu on you (as we say in Gullah) I am not going to leak the book 📖 and say who did it, but let’s just say 🤔 who all does the lord work ain’t really for the lord.
This was a good book. A great way to blend science and technology into a romantasy showing how important science and technology is in the supernatural and human world. I gave it a four because at times the heroine acted like she was still a teen with the way she acted and spoke. As opposed to other times in the book. I felt like the character was written for a YA romance which was confusing as opposed to other characters in the book.
The question I couldn’t escape while reading. Seeing that slop photo of Xavian really ruined this book for me. Ruined the authenticity; ruined the quality of the work all together.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read, It definitely was an unexpected ride that was pulled off effortlessly. The storyline flowed easily and I loved the characters and can't wait to see the upcoming growth from them especially Lakeita's . Kudos to the author well done
This book was everything. I'm still coming down from my high. I don’t want to write anything that gives anything away. I was hooked from the beginning. This author has a true knack for combining the right mix of villains and victors!
