Wolf King #1

Omega Rising

Rate this book
Cass Nolan has been forced to avoid the burn of human touch for her whole life, drawing comfort instead from her dreams of a silver wolf—her protector, her friend. When her stalking nightmares return, her imaginary dead sister’s ghost tells her to run, Cass knows she should listen, but the sinfully hot stranger she just hired to work on her ranch has her mind buzzing with possibilities. Not only does her skin accept Nathan’s touch, it demands it. Cass must make a decision—run again and hope she saves the people who have become her family, or stand and fight. Question is, will it be with Nathan or against him?

Nathan Rivers’ life is consumed by his quest to find the Omega wolf responsible for killing his brother, but when the trail leads him to Cass and her merry band of shapeshifters, his wolf wants only to claim her for himself. When evidence begins piling up that Cass is the Omega he’s been seeking, things become complicated—especially since someone else wants her dead. Saving her life might mean sacrificing his own, but it may be worth it to save the woman he can’t keep from reaching for.

Anna Kyle

Anna Kyle wrote her first story at age 12 on her dad's old manual typewriter, and though the technology has changed, she hasn’t stopped since. She lives in the Midwest surrounded by family and friends and dogs and horses. They’ve forgiven her (mostly) when they appear in her stories.

She reads everything she can get her hands on, but romances, especially paranormals, are her favorite. Vampires, humans, Fae, shapeshifters, or demons, it doesn’t matter—Anna’s heart goes pitter-pat for the Happily Ever After. Hot heroes + strong, funny heroines = awesome.

The world building in this book was so complex that I felt like I was reading a second or third book in a series. The first several chapters I really struggled to keep up with what was going on and who was who and the rules for the paranormal aspects to the book. The payoff was later on in the book when I was up-to-speed and couldn't put it down. That's really the upside to a book with a well-developed world...once you're in, you're in and you're invested. It's like staying for a week in paradise instead of just driving through going ninety. (I read super fast, but books like this make me slow down and linger.)

I liked Cass's character. She was quirky and flawed. Nathan was pretty awesome too...though there were a few times that I felt like he should have groveled his way back into her good graces. The romance was really hot and built well. Also, I'm a sucker for the shifter-match thing where a shifter recognizes their mate right away. I love that.

I wish other books were out (besides the novella) because I want to see what happens with certain characters. Le sigh. Getting in early on a series can be frustrating. Anyway, I'd recommend this to paranormal romance fans who like to get in deep with a world. This had many different types of paranormal aspects: magic, fae, and shifters--wolves, cougars, bears, etc. Fans of Eve Langlais, Milly Taiden, or Georgette St. Clair would enjoy this romance.

After reading Skye Falling, I was looking forward to Omega Rising. Anna Kyle didn't disappoint.
Omega Rising was packed with romantic tension, hot shifters, and a good story. I loved the humor and often laughed out loud. The main character Cass is saucy and takes care of herself, qualities I like. She isn't afraid to speak her mind, and often does. I wasn't completely taken by Nathan at first, he was a little too hard for me...but I warmed up to him.
I enjoyed the story and world Kyle has built. It took a bit for me to get a hold of all the politics, but I did (I was probably overtired when I read where she explained it so it didn't sink in as well as it should have).
I recommend this book for anyone who likes a fun, yet intense, paranormal read.

I had mixed feelings about this book. On the plus side, I liked the characters, especially Cass's spunk. I enjoyed how Cass and Nathan's relationship progressed. There were some pretty awesome lines, and quite a few I laughed at, then made sure to repeat to my husband so he could laugh as well. The story line itself is good, but it started off confusing. Another reviewer wrote that it started like the second book in a series, assuming you knew things, but it is the first in the series, and you do have things explained as you go. For this reason, I got slightly frustrated and it took me a lot more to get into the book. Sometimes things felt unclear and like something was left out. The copy I received was an advance unedited proof, so maybe some of this got worked out before the release. I hope so, because the story about the characters was very good. It gives you enough to be happy with the end, but leaves plenty open for more books in the series. I probably will add the second in the series, Skye Falling to my to read list, because I really did enjoy the characters, and now that I've read the first, hopefully the beginning will flow better. Again, it wasn't a bad book, but I have others I enjoyed more.

I received this book for free as part of the Goodreads Giveaways.

3.5 stars, actually.

This was the first sexy times Paranormal Romance I ever read fully centered on a horse farm. The riding lessons, the watering of horses, the getting bitten by horses….the implication that the main character/owner of the horse farm, Cass, totally loved animals–that was very cool.

In this story, Cass, with her loyal band of horse farm workers, has her seemingly normal on the surface world upset when Nathan stumbles into her farm looking for an Omega (a shifter witch).

Cass seems normal, but others’ touch results in burns on her skin, and she sits in a rock circle and talks to her secret dead sister every so often. And she also dreams of protector wolves. And she’s also running from a crazy stalker she names “the Hag” (and hagatha and hagzilla, and a host of other names I enjoyed once I figured out they were all the same person).

There are a lot of characters, alot of rich backstory, and alot of unexplained stuff. This sometimes combined to confuse me for the first half of the story. I felt like I just couldn’t keep track of all the details of Nathan’s issues with his enforcer stuff, his history with alpha wolf Tremont, as well as Cass’s backstory and manifestations of non-humanness.

I also noticed some writer ticks (which might be a first book issue) that included the touch-avoidant Cass brushing her fingertips over various characters in order to soothe them. There’s also alot of Cass pressing a leg to the side of Nathan or another protector….so little things but they irked me as I read them.

Omega Rising does introduce a host of pretty interesting side characters that could all go off and have great adventures. Nathan’s a pretty dominant alpha male, so fans of that will probably enjoy how he growls whenever someone touches Cass or is constantly protecting her.

So lots of potential, but didn’t quite hit the right buttons for my personal taste.

I was a little lost at the beginning of this book.  But once I got past the confusing part, I was up to speed and found myself enjoying the story. I am rather partial to werewolves so I liked that this had weres in it. In most stories shifters tend to stick to their own kind.  I liked the magical element along with all the different weres living and working together to protect Cass who was unaware of what she actually was; which made for a very entertaining story.

Ms. Kyle wrote with passion for the paranormal almost as if she had inside information. The characters from the main ones to the ones in the background were real. They were easy to envision. Her eye for detail made a very compelling story that I hated to see end.

I liked that Nathan, who was on a quest which led him to Cass, knew that she was his mate right away even if she was human. They had a bond from the beginning which drew them to each other. This helped in making for some pretty tense scenes along with some hot and steamy sex. Nathan tended to be a little overprotective of his mate but Cass showed him that she was much stronger than she looked and could hold her own. I loved that Ms. Kyle had her use a dart gun on him so she could look for her sister. It added some warmth and humor to the story.

Overall I enjoyed Ms. Kyle's Omega story. The bond that the sisters had was magical. I liked the way they connected and yet even though they didn’t know where the other was as one thought her twin was dead they still worked in helping each other survive. I thought of them almost as an atom split each needing the other to survive.

I am so looking forward to the next in this series to see what new adventure we get to go on. This was such a fun quirky book with something for everyone.

I was offered an advance reader copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review, however I can say with utmost sincerity that I am in awe!

The storyline was a mass of twists and turns that kept me flipping pages long after I should have! The characters are riveting! You can't help but to share in their pain, pleasure, worry, love, hope and sorrow. Each one a unique personality that truly comes alive. The entire world is fascinating, from the first page to the last. I found myself laughing out loud as someone got snarky, crying quietly as another was laid to rest, gritting my teeth as things got stressful and so much more.

If you have a love of Paranormal Romance and don't mind some steam, this is a must read! Don't take my word for it, grab a copy and jump on for one fascinating journey!

New twists

This is a paranormal with shape shifters but it has a nice twist that gives this book an interesting twist from the first word to the last. The romantic and sexual tension is wonderful and our female lead delightful. Found myself a new author to follow.
