The Duplicate Death

Rate this book
When the barrister Ashley Tempest is called in to assist the trustees of the late Sir John Rellingham, he finds himself faced with a tantalising mystery: why has Sir John established a trust to safeguard £20,000 of his inheritance, without telling the trustees for whom, or for what reason the money is to be protected? Tempest is convinced that the answer is connected to the mysterious death of Evangeline Stableford - a death whose circumstances bear an uncanny resemblance to a suicide case investigated by Tempest many years before...

Originally published in 1910, this is another in the series of Edwardian murder mysteries featuring Ashley Tempest.

Four stars is possibly a bit generous for this book but I am giving them anyway as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It is a murder mystery with very strong connections to the legal profession. The detective, Ashley Tempest, is a barrister (as was the author) and a lot of the story revolves around legal argument and opinion which some might find tedious but I didn't. It has a very complex plot and this reader anyway needed to keep his wits about him as it was difficult to follow at times. It was very nicely written and considering it was published in 1910 the language is much less stilted than many other books of the period.

My only real criticism is that I would have liked a bit more personal information about Tempest and the other main protagonists as they are all rather anonymous.

Great value from Kindle at under a quid, I have just bought the only other one of his that they have. Highly recommend.

Although this novella was first published in 1910, it is written in clear and uncluttered prose which is just as well given the convolutions of the plot. That the author was a barrister who specialised in cases relating to the peerage and whose main interest was heraldry and lineage would come as little surprise.

The barrister, Ashley Tempest, is initially consulted about a mysterious trust created by the will of an eminent lawyer but soon is involved in a murder investigation. It is difficult to say much about this but,in fact, the solution was not particularly complicated and ,apart from one twist,I did work it out.

Several aspects of the plot do stretch the reader’s credulity but the insights into the twisted sense of morality of the period are intriguing.
