Chrissie Lane was determined to prove that the well-known nightclub owner should be charged with the crime for which her young sister was awaiting trial.
Going to work for him seemed to be a necessary evil if she was to achieve her goal. So did pretending to like him and enjoy his company.
The only problem was that Chrissie really was beginning to like this man. In spite of the pain he'd caused her and her family, it was suddenly becoming very important that he not be the guilty one.
Jennifer Taylor is a British author of more than 50 medical romance novels published by Mills & Boon since 1988. A former chartered librarian and researcher, she lives in northwest England with her husband and dog, enjoying reading and travel.
Re A Magical Touch - Jennifer Taylor brings us one of the most uniquely employed h's in all of HPlandia - she is a stage magician and apparently has VERY magical fingers. She also has a little sister who got played by a bad guy and is now sitting in jail awaiting trial for drug smuggling when she was stopped at British Customs after visiting her supposed true love in New York.
None of us need to even speculate, we know the h is going on a quest to bail her sweet baby sis out - even tho the girl is stubbornly closed mouthed about who might have set her up. The only clues the h has is the sister's letters to her invalid mum where she refers to her new big love as "J" and names the London nightclub/casino that he seems to be a part of. The h assumes the J refers to the first name of the H, who is the part of owner of the night club, in conjunction with his brother, The h manages to get her agent to get her an audition for a spot in the nightly cabaret act the club shows.
When the book opens, the h is late for her audition, she doesn't live in London and had to travel and the frosty witch who guards the inner sanctum to the club takes one look at the tall blonde beauty of the h and tells her she is late and she can't hang around for an open slot. So the h puts her Art of Misdirection Skillz to work, and she sneaks in the back. She is hoping to find the auditioning area and make a plea for a trial shot.
But the cagey H, who is also probably a drug smuggler, has cameras all over the place and he catches her in a back room and the h has to think fast. Through a combination of innocent charm and some flirting, plus a bit of a confrontation with the Frosty Door Witch, the h gets the H to give her chance for an audition.
Then she drops the bombshell about what she actually performs and the H is hooked. We can see it right away, but the h is still petting unicorns, so she is very nervous about what to do. On one hand, the H is interested and eyeballs are REALLY eyeballing and undressing things. The h thinks she should use that attraction to trap her man and get the evidence to free her sister.
On the other side of the story, the h is kinda worried about those eyeballs REALLY eyeballing her, cause she is having the insane compulsion to Eyeball Back With Serious Intent. And with that idear out there, we have the conflict of the story. The h doesn't know what she is dealing with. She is on an undercover rescue mission, but her knees get weak around the kind, considerate and very nice H. Then there is the damming evidence that the H is involved in some very nefarious dealings.
The h gets the job and her grand plan of stealth investigation is to poke around the club and the H's flat upstairs and try to find some proof that the H set up her sister. She isn't very good at it.
When she is searching part of the H's office, the H is very close in the room next door nursing a bad headache. The h is forced to rely on the patented Magic h Fingers Head Massaging technique to deflect attention from what she is really doing. (She does have some serious Misdirection Skillz.) But while massaging the H's head and shoulders, she can't up but be ensorcelled by the texture of his skin and things are looking kinda dire for the impartial investigative abilities of the h.
Roofie kisses ensue and the h's backbone of justice is slowly dissolving away. Things get even more confusing for her when the H rescues her from a bad situation with a drunken club goer who tries to assault her after the show, she had to get tough with the drunken slime slurper on stage. The H gives her a key to his upstairs flat and tells her it can be her 'shelter from the storm'. The H is very aware of her innocent status and vows to take things slowly. The h is growing increasingly confused.
The H is really careful and considerate and doesn't even try to kiss her if she doesn't want it. It isn't fitting with the image of a man who sets a girl up to be a drug mule. As the h gets to know the H better, we find out he is actually adopted and after his parents adopted him, they got preggers with his younger brother. The younger brother soon became the favorite, tho the father at least realized that the family empire needed the H to run it, cause the younger brother couldn't. The h feels really bad that his parents were so biased, and she tried to make the H feel better about it.
The h is still searching things tho, and all she has found is a scrap of letter from her sister to 'J'. The h is trying to sneak back into the H's office, to search it better, but she runs into a dubious meeting between the wanna be OW and the Frosty Witch of the Door. Eventually the h manages to steal the office keys and gets into search. Then the H comes back unexpectedly and the h is caught red handed searching the office. The whole story comes pouring out and the H is horrified that he was falling in love and she was setting him up. The h tries to explain her side of things and about her sister but the H is too hurt that she thought he was a drug dealer to listen and they both part ways being very upset and having wobblies.
We soon find out that the drug dealer was the H's younger brother - his first name also starts with a 'J' in conjunction with the Frosty Door Witch and the wanna be OW that we never actually meet. The h's little sister is cleared of all charges. The h wants to apologize for misjudging the H. After she throws herself on the H's car as he is driving away and tries to talk to him to tell him she is sorry, the H still rejects her. So she and her sister go back to their home village and everybody has some mopey moments while mourning their love, the h sends the H his key back.
The h is wandering around and upon seeing a magpie, she looks for another one. She wants to avoid the old magpie nursery saying "One for Sorrow, Two for Joy" and instead she sees the H. He finally calmed down, got over the shock of his younger brother being a drug dealer and thought about both his and the h's situation. Then he got his flat key back in the mail and realized he has to fix things.
He decides that he is sorry for being mean and not supporting the h in her time of trauma and she decides that she is really sorry, sorta, as well and she is glad she did not do as the H told her she should have and called the police. Since they are both sorry and they both are madly in love, they decide to make a go of it with more magical touching h skillz for the HEA.
This one was okay, and parts were pretty funny. I did think the h was kinda TSTL tho when she couldn't put the obvious clues together and realize that the brother was the problem, not the H. The fact that she did not ask any questions, when she knew that both the H and the brother shared a first initial made me feel that maybe she should have apologized a bit more.
Still the H was pretty lovely and the h trying to be an undercover investigator was fairly entertaining. This one isn't worth hunting down. But if it is just lying around, you could find worse avenues to follow in your travels to HPlandia.

I like this author a lot, wish she wrote more non-med Harlequins.
This is closer to 4 stars except the h cries a lot and she really should have talked to H before. His club had a zillion surveillance cameras and it’s hard to believe employees could use it as a drug smuggling base without either H or security guys involved.
