De ondraaglijke lichtheid van de vleermuis: Essays & beschouwingen
Louise Fresco (1952) is hoogleraar in Wageningen, en uit hoofde van haar functie niet alleen op de hoogte van het Nederlandse wetenschappelijke wereldje, maar ook van landbouwkundig onderzoek in de tropen, ontwikkelingshulp, internationale organisaties en wat daar zoal mee samenhangt. Bovendien heeft zij een vlotte en soms scherpe pen, zoals blijkt uit haar columns in de NRC. Een aantal van die columns is in dit boek verzameld, aangevuld met teksten van andere herkomst. Boeiend, origineel, speels, en soms indringend. Aan de orde komen onder meer: de reden waarom Nederlanders de Fransen zo arrogant vinden; het schrijven op de fiets; de Chinese vergadercultuur en de onze; het vertekende, romantische natuurbeeld in Nederland; en de lof van de vakidiotie.

Recently Louise Fresco's magnum opus came to my attention: 'Hamburgers in het paradijs. Voedsel in tijden van schaarste en overvloed' published by Bakker Amsterdam 2012 ('Hamburgers in paradise : the stories behind the food we eat', published 2015 by Princeton University Press). See this webpage:

I am beginning to recognize this as an important book.
Therefore I grabbed this set of essays and columns 'De ondraaglijke lichtheid van de vleermuis' ('The unbearable lightness of the bat'). A number of articles in this book is devoted to the 'new food laws', which are preludiums (published 1997) of some of the contence of 'Hamburgers in het paradijs'.
So far, I am very much intrigued by the line of argumentation and the outcome.
so far my notes at the beginning of august.
It appears that I've found most of the articles very interesting and worth while for a far more extended group of readers. Fresco has an enormous knowledge and expertise in agricultural science. She knows very well to catch the non-scholars' interest, by her approach and attractive language. Respect. JM
