Dowden takes an activist stance on critical thinking, asking students to create and revise arguments rather than simply recognizing and criticizing them. His book emphasizes inductive reasoning and the analysis of individual claims in the beginning, leaving deductive arguments for consideration later in the course.

This book provides a thorough, engaging, and clear overview of key topics in logic. I especially enjoyed the section on class logic using Venn diagrams. I developed a new appreciation of logic with this book as a foundational discipline assessing the structure of good inferential reasoning. It has regular concept checks to make sure students are paying attention and applying what they learn.
