Earth's Last War

Rate this book
EARTH'S LAST WAR tells the romantic story of Ashlyn Parker and Steven Sherrah, who is in command of Earth's last surviving starship. He has been struggling to keep the handful of Earth's survivors alive, hiding from the most vicious and powerful enemy humanity has ever known, an enemy that is relentless in his determination to see that every last human is killed.

His life is turned upside down as Ashlyn Parker, a woman genetically engineered to be mentally and physically perfect - the next step in humanity's evolution, awakens from stasis. For her protection, she had been cryogenically frozen when Earth was attacked. Her return is brutal, for she awakens fifteen years later into a post-apocalyptic Earth. Everyone she had known before is gone, the world destroyed.

From the first moment that the distress signal is received and Steven rescues Ashlyn, his heart is inexplicably drawn to her, as she is to him. Her presence challenges all that he has known, for within her, she holds secrets to a past he had never known existed.

As the two of them join forces, secrets are unveiled. The survivors are given a reason to hope. Her abilities, knowledge and support will help Steven lead the survivors on a journey across the stars where they will discover that humanity is far more important than they ever thought possible.

Had this been billed as Male ego driven erotica - I wouldn't have picked it up.
It should have been.

Too bad - this author had a few good ideas that just get completely overshadowed by all the ridiculous shit.

I could go on and on (in fact I did, but decided not to add it since he IS a new author...) about how much I actually dislike this book.

EDIT:

I left this book the same review I left here over on Amazon.
The author came after me telling me I didn't know what I was talking about.
He also decided to go after the other people who left bad reviews - either for the very liberal use of porn (which I am all for and yes, I DO know the difference between that and romance), or his (in THEIR opinion) bad plot ideas.
People DO have the right not to like this book.
It doesn't stop him from very long winded lectures on why they're wrong.
I only made it to response 2 before I gave up.

I need a drink.

A would-be SF epic into which the author threw just about anything he could think of. The plot is impossible to synopsize, but it has something to do with two genetically engineered beings, a man and a woman, whose job it is to save humanity years after an alien invasion wiped out everybody but a few thousand people.

This book throws together so many disparate elements that it would take several pages to list them all. The plot includes a post-apocalyptic earth, alien abductions, astral projection, Star Wars-ish mysticism, grueling horror, light-hearted adventure (complete with playful romantic banter), David Weber-like military SF, in-your-face pornography, maudlin sentimentality, giant monster battles a la "Godzilla", and that good ol' standby of 1950's Sci-Fi movies, giant spiders, plus a re-interpretation of Biblical themes in SF terms. Combinations of disparate influences can be fun (i.e. "Star Wars"), but the author never succeeds in combining these elements in a satisfying way. The book's tone whipsaws violently back and forth from dead serious to comic to sentimental to horrifying, etc. It seems that the author just started writing and kept adding things as they occurred to him until he had enough material for a novel.

In addition, the Kindle edition of the book is badly in need of an editor. At one point a character says "You dare to call Enlil, human filth!" when, by context, I'm pretty sure the author meant "You dare to call Enlil human filth!" In another place, the heroine is redundantly described as "erotically sexy." These and similar errors occur throughout the book.

In the end, I think this books expects readers to make an emotional investment that it does not earn. It seems as if we are supposed to think of the principals, Steven and Ashlyn, as star-crossed lovers, but they're really just two people genetically engineered to be able to have great sex (even by astral projection!), complete with hours-long orgasms. We never see their relationship develop; they fall in love because they are engineered to. The book lets Steven's character off the hook; his beloved wife and kids are perfectly OK with his red-hot sexual relationship with a stranger. After all, it's his "destiny". Talk about emotional dishonesty!

I think I can see what the author was trying to do, but it just doesn't work. At one point, the hero thinks "None of this is making sense." Exactly.

NOTE: This book was apparently re-titled as "2287 A.D." with the name of series altered from "Children of Destiny" to "The Ashlyn Chronicles". Ads for it under this new title still pop up on my Kindle.

Not what I expected from the description

First this is not Ashlyn's story. Its Steven's story. I don't mind long books and the author didn't waste time with the story. It progressed quickly but it took a strange twist that I did not enjoy. As the author said there is sex in the book. Not romance but sex for the sake of it. Often at times and in places that made no sense. This book was a sold 3, maybe 3.5 stars. The ending, the epilogue was so terrible that there is no chance I will pick up book 2. I think the author wanted to be clever but it pretty much trivialized the entire journey that happened. The story was also much darker than I expected.

Sci-fi Porn

There is no other way to describe this book. I'm no prude, I'm a big John Dingo in fact, but this book definitely crosses the line. The author attempts to keep the reader on the sci-fi track but like his main characters falls victim to his lust for sex. This is for mature readers, in fact some may be offended by the authors graphic depiction of sex between the main characters. Book one is enough for me, Nuff said!

At first I was concerned with the idea of space sex in a post-apocalyptic setting. I was wondering how a writer could make that mix work… but after a few pages, all my worries were gone. The sex isn’t gratuitous, it’s essential for the storytelling and it’s nicely merged with the sci-fi aspects of the book.
The fact that Carl Sagan was one of Van Dyke’s inspirations caught my eye. It makes a lot of sense: Carl Sagan was a man eager for new experiences, and he was, despite being skeptical, very open-minded and forthright when talking about sex (search for his interviews and you’ll see it).
This is the largest and most ambitious sci-fi erotica book I’ve ever read. There is a plethora of side characters and they are more developed than usual, and the main storyline encompasses the timeless struggle between good and evil, Steven vs. Enlil. Enlil is a great villain, in the sense that he is really, really wicked, resourceful and manipulative. Will Steven prevail against the deceitful scoundrel?
As for the “steamy” moments, they’re not vulgar or overtly depicted. It’s not overemotional either, in short, it’s balanced and well-dosed throughout the 600 pages.
I recommend this book to mature readers that enjoy reading erotica and sci-fi and are curious about an epic adventure with space battles… and space sex. 5/5 stars!

This is the most inspiring and most educative sci-fi erotica book I’ve ever read. Earth's Last War was written very well with plenty of action sci-fi, and some steamy scenes didn't let me down.

The writing is excellent—the characters are relatable and likable. This is definitely one of the best science fiction novels I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a while.

This book is so much more than just another sci-fi story. It is a human journey. It's a love story. It's erotic and sexy. This is basically the story about facing a primitive enemy that came very close to destroying mankind.

Really Author did a great job here. Story, Idea and characters of this book are really awesome.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who love a good read. Enjoy my sincere five star rating.

I am a big science fiction fan and am always looking for something new. A friend recommended this, and I'm glad i took the chance on it. It has some bad reviews that seem more aimed at the content then the quality.

This story starts out fast, and draws you strait in. There is no "filler" or slow buildup of detail here. Its action packed and fun to read, yet still dives into the character development and tough questions. It has some good subplots and sets the scene for future novels while still holding its own. This is definitely the start to a series I would enjoy reading.

I couldn't put it down until it was over. Earth's Last War was written very well with plenty of action sci-fi, and some steamy scenes didn't let me down. I love how descriptive the author is when explaining the environment along with the captivating dialog of the characters. It made me feel as though I were there. This was a very entertaining book overall!

Started slow

Fantastic read, interesting conceptual idea about God, Satan, and religion...at the end I could not stop reading. Can't wait for the next read
