In the Jianghu, there is only the illusion of peace…Sen has returned from the capital and reluctantly begun the work of building a sect. Yet the endless politics, rivalries, and logistical burdens of leadership weigh heavily on a man who once answered to no one. Every day pulls him deeper into a life he never truly wanted.

Only the looming war with the spirit beasts keeps him from abandoning it all.
Yet, not even distance can allow someone as famous as Judgment’s Gale to go undisturbed for long. Emissaries from sects begin to intrude on his small corner of the world. Some come with benign intentions, while others come to put the former wandering cultivator in his place.

Once, Sen could simply walk away. Now he has a sect to protect and a daughter whose safety he will defend at any cost. Sen may find that war of a different kind is unavoidable…

I never tire of reading this amazing cultivation series, and this, book 9, kept me reading through the night. Sen is becoming ever more involved in his sect, even though he still insists it be called an academy, as he hates sects. These usually thrive on violence and hunting for power. One of the rules Sen set down for any cultivators visiting his sect is that the mortals in his town are to be respected, so when a group of cultivators from the Twisted Blade sect arrive and start causing havoc in town his ire is unleashed and they are all killed. Sen knows that this will cause a retaliation from the rest of the sect who might have even used the idiots to have a reason to attack Sen's Deep Wilds sect. So Sen decides he won't wait for this to happen, but to take the war to them. Sen now has his people to look out for, grandmother Lu, Falling Leaf, and Glimmer of Night, but most of all his beloved daughter Ai, and he intends to make sure no harm comes to his family and friends. This book is brutal in that Sen takes on the mantle of Judgement's Gale once again, as he obliterates a whole sect overnight. He takes no pleasure in doing this, as he knows that he will have to pay for his crimes in his next life, but what needs to be done has to be done. Apart from this a war which was even worse than a sect war was threatening them, and this was a threat coming from the spirit beasts and their King who was out to attack humanity, be this mortals and cultivators alike. I love that Sen has grown such a kind heart, and no matter how little he thinks of himself, I think he is a very responsible and kind cultivator, and I love the way he interacts with mortals especially his daughter Ai. I look forward to book 10 which I am sure will be another epic read.
