Rate this book
Hanu has decided he's a full-fledged Dissenter now, and he's set out to interrupt the Ancient Ones' plans. But he finds himself lost in the desert instead. And with the Ancient Ones crawling the streets and citizens coming up missing in Capital City, he must rely on new friends, as well as old friends, to help him reach his goals before the Ancient Ones reach theirs. But it might not be enough, as it seems like the more he discovers about what the Ancient Ones have in store for humanity, the more discord arises within the Underground.
In the second installment of The Wake Trilogy, the future of humanity will be one of oblivious compliance if Hanu and his friends don't find a way to overcome the Dissenters' obstacles.

A mind-boggling adventure, Devore’s 3-part thrilling dystopian series tells the story of a young hero who is struggling to save the humanity from the outer-space villains.

When the Ancient Ones offered to save the humanity from self-destruction in the first installment of the series, no one on Earth had any idea about their ulterior motives. Now a hundred years have passed, and the planet is controlled by the ruthless aliens. When 14-years-old Hanu gets a chance to escape the psychiatrist facility on his way to the District of Operations with other patients, he doesn’t think twice. A group of Dissenters help Hanu and other escapees realize a harsh reality about the life on Earth: the Ancient Ones are here to destroy the humanity, and the only way to stop them from doing so is by closing the portals permanently.

In the second installment, as the full-fledged member of the Dissenter organization, Hanu is determined to destroy the portals that the Ancient Ones exploit to enter the planet. But an accident throws him in the middle of a desert. Now he must find his way back to the Underground or risk letting the Ancient Ones win.

In the third installment, the City of Fire and the Underground City's governments are unable to reach any resolution with the civil war at its peak. With the approaching Year One, an event that will implement the Ancient Ones’ complete autonomy over Earth, it becomes imperative that Hanu and his friends destroy the Ancient Ones completely or risk humanity’s complete annihilation.

Devore’s characters are multidimensional and memorable: a charismatic hybrid, a gifted teenager and his loyal group of friends, a genius organization, a malevolent outer-space villain who learns to accept the human values, the ruthless aliens - antagonists or heroes, all the characters make an impression with their well-rounded portrayal. The intriguing intergalactic world and the setting of the dystopian Earth add to the intrigue.

The series is recognizable as a space opera, but everything from humanity’s self-destruction to the politics of the Intergalactic Council is richly detailed, providing depth to the story. With its exciting, swashbuckling adventures of ordinary heroes and beautifully written accessible prose, the series will appeal to readers of any age including the young and old.

A brilliant series to introduce the middle graders or early teens to the world of dystopian fiction.

Wake of Dissent by Sasha DeVore is a young adult dystopian/science fiction story set on a futuristic Earth, after human wars have torn the Earth's atmosphere and rendered the surface uninhabitable. The human race's survival is now in the hands of the seemingly benevolent alien race called the Ancient Ones. But things are not as they seem. The Dissenters are a secret faction of humans who have discovered the truth about the Ancient Ones. When fourteen-year-old Hanu discovers a secret that could save humanity, he knows he has to take it to the Dissenters. As the Ancient Ones up the ante and Year One looms on the horizon, Hanu and his friends must find a way to convince the resistance to fight for humanity’s right to live on Earth.

As dystopia goes, Wake of Dissent puts a unique spin on this popular YA genre. With a blend of entertaining three-dimensional primary and secondary characters, it is most definitely a winner. The descriptions of Earth are very vivid and captured my imagination. It was refreshing to read a dystopian story where the villain wasn’t a crazy, afraid of change human but an alien race. The Ancient Ones were the perfect antagonistic force with a believable end game. Sasha DeVore put as much thought into her protagonist as she did her antagonist. The reader may not like the Ancient Ones but will at least understand why they do what they do. Fans of UFO conspiracy theories will enjoy this novel and the story’s continuation, Year One.

Love LOVE the story of this series. It's strange and compelling, but also incorporates alien conspiracy theory in a way I can totally nerd out over.

I had the same problems with this book as I did with the first, the writing. The author does not do the best job at describing spaces or actions, which can be challenging when trying to understand what's going on in a sifi world. I sorta just stopped re-reading when I didn't understand the layout and made something else up in my head. There are also some easy proof reading things that could have been solved with a solid overview of the book. I just wish the writing was on par with the concepts, if it was, these books would be beyond phenomenal
