Frangois-Joseph Fitis had the privilege to have Paganini, Schumann and Berlioz as contemporaries and to be assisted by the famous violin maker and dealer, Jean Baptiste Vuillaume on this work. This fascinating treatise was first published in 1856 (Antoine Stradivari, luthier cilhbre). Its chapters detail the history and development of the violin family, old master Italian violin makers and an analysis of the bows of Frangois Tourte. Fitis' research provides a valuable reference source and reveals a unique window into his times.
François-Joseph Fétis was a Belgian musicologist, composer, teacher, and one of the most influential music critics of the 19th century. His enormous compilation of biographical data in the Biographie universelle des musiciens remains an important source of information today.
Filled with historically documented and fascinating details about the evolution of stringed instruments, of violin making, especially that of Stradivarius. Includes similar information regarding bows. This slim volume offered excellent fuel for my novel in progress.
