What the Lake Knows

Rate this book
Some towns disappear. Others wait beneath the water.

When repairs to Pine Valley’s dam force the reservoir to drain, the long-submerged town of Evansville slowly begins to return.

First the streets appear.
Then the foundations of houses and stores, laid out in the quiet grid of a place where people once lived ordinary lives.

For most people in nearby Hillsborough, it’s a curiosity.

For seventeen-year-old Emily Warren, it becomes something else.

Sixty years earlier, on the night of graduation, a girl named Clara Jennings vanished without explanation. The story the town accepted was simple: Clara left and never came back. Over time, the questions faded, and the town learned not to look too closely at what was missing.

Emily never had a reason to question it.

Until the lake goes down.

As the valley floor emerges, so do fragments of the past—stories half remembered, secrets carefully avoided, and the lingering sense that the water has been holding something all these years.

Some histories sink.

Some wait.

And sometimes, when the lake recedes, the truth begins to surface.

I just started reading What the Lake Knows and I’m already hooked. The atmosphere is beautifully done, the mystery feels quietly unsettling, and the opening pulled me in right away. I’m very curious to see what lies beneath the surface.

What the Lake Knows by Devienne Weekes is a quiet but intriguing mystery that slowly pulls you in. The image of a drowned town reappearing as the reservoir drains is a fascinating setup and creates a strong sense of atmosphere from the start.

Emily Warren’s curiosity about Clara Jennings’ disappearance adds a layer of suspense as old secrets begin to surface. The story captures that small, town feeling where everyone seems to know something, but no one wants to say too much.

Overall, it’s an engaging and thoughtful mystery about the past, hidden truths, and the questions that refuse to stay buried.

I just finished What the Lake Knows, and it stayed with me long after the final page. The atmosphere of Pine Valley and the slowly emerging drowned town was beautifully written and incredibly vivid. Emily Warren felt like a real, relatable character, and her curiosity about Clara Jennings’ disappearance kept me turning pages. I loved how the story explored memory, loyalty, and the hidden truths small towns often carry. The pacing builds steadily, revealing pieces of the mystery at just the right moments. If you enjoy thoughtful mysteries with emotional depth and a haunting setting, this book is definitely worth reading.

Just loved reading a book written by a local MT girl! Very descriptive writing. Definitely felt like a story you could see happening in Montana.

I just started reading this spooky book and already can't wait to read more!

This is one of those books that quietly turns up the heat, escalating the creep factor bit by bit til you're not sure what exactly is happening here...a scratching noise manifesting outside your window...a fence that seems to move it's placement little by little when no one is paying attention...a section of dark water in an old house's foundation that looks and behaves differently than nearby water.

Great unsettling world-building!

Book quote:
"On her way down the hall, Emily noticed Kate’s sketchbook open on the floor again, the same drawing darkened almost to the point of tearing the page.
.....................
Emily lay back on her bed, staring at the ceiling fan as it turned slow and uneven, the rhythm just off enough to notice.

The fence.
The door.
The letters.

All of it rearranging itself without actually moving. Outside, something shifted— branches scraping, gravel crunching faintly on the road. Emily held her breath until the sound passed, leaving only the steady hum of night. The town wasn’t haunted. It was weighted. And Emily was beginning to understand that some things didn’t need to surface to pull you under. They just needed you to stand too close for too long."

Hmm...ok, so this is strange, not strange in an eerie sense just strange in that I have no idea what the author is trying to say...
every once in a while the author throws an odd word into the text; it's always the same odd word or a variation of it, with no explanation nor translation, (sGrandpaach)?
(ie: "Emily’s sGrandpaach tightened at the phrase personal effects.")
This word shows up several times and I'm trying to discover if it's a real word in a language I don't know, or some kind of typo of the same word, over and over.

"auGrandpaatically" this word is another variation of the previously mentioned word; it shows up again and again throughout this book, with no explanation and no meaning. I looked it up on Google and nothing.

Another example:
“Come by Grandpaorrow if you want,” Grandma added. “We’ll be around.”

Any of you other readers out there have an explanation/translation?

Such an odd tale, which wasn't at all where I thought it was going...well, some of it did, lol. There were several surprises along the way and I really enjoyed it!
One of my favorite characters in here is Blake the friend/potential boyfriend of the main character, Emily, as he stays calm in the midst of chaos, always by her side or has her back, just letting her know he's there to support her. I like that! Her younger sister, Kate (an artist), also lets it be known that she's there for her, whatever it is that she's going through. I sure would like a look at her sketchbook as I feel that the whole story might be unconsciously hidden in it's depths.

I actually was surprised at an unexpected turn in the storyline that changed everything! Well done, you!

Two thumbs up! 👍👍

What the Lake Knows is one of those rare novels that quietly pulls you in and refuses to let go. Devienne Weekes creates such a vivid atmosphere that you can almost feel the cool air around the drained reservoir and see the streets of the long-lost town slowly reappearing from beneath the water. The mystery surrounding Clara Jennings unfolds at a thoughtful pace, giving readers time to truly connect with Emily and her determination to uncover the truth. I especially appreciated how the story explores loyalty, memory, and the complicated ways small communities protect their secrets. It’s not just a mystery, It’s also a beautiful coming-of-age journey. I would absolutely recommend this book to readers who love atmospheric stories with emotional depth and compelling small-town mysteries.
