In the epic conclusion of the Lazare Family Saga, two very different brothers must become allies to save the woman they both love.
Charleston, South Carolina, 1860. For nine long years, Clare Stratford has struggled to understand her mother’s final choice. The truth comes at a devastating price.
Clare’s lifelong love, Dr. David Lazare, risks everything to heal her wounded body. But only the medicine of David’s Cheyenne brother, Ésh, can mend Clare’s shattered soul. Ésh offers her an escape from her past and from the South that has condemned her.
Can a scarred Southern belle find peace and purpose amongst Cheyenne tipis? Or, as the country hurtles toward civil war, does Clare’s destiny lie back East alongside her beloved physician?
At once intimate drama and multigenerational epic, Sweet Medicine is the final book in the sweeping Lazare Family Saga that transports readers from the West Indies to the Wild West, from Charleston, Paris, and Rome into the depths of the human heart. The series begins with Necessary Sins.
Elizabeth Bell has been writing stories since the second grade. At the age of fourteen, she chose a pen name and vowed to become a published author. That same year, she began The Lazare Family Saga.
New generations and forgotten corners of history kept demanding attention, and the saga became four epic novels. After three decades of research and revision, Elizabeth decided she’d done them justice.
Upon earning her MFA in Creative Writing at George Mason University, Elizabeth realized she would have to return her two hundred library books. Instead, she cleverly found a job in the university library, where she works to this day.
Her historical series The Lazare Family Saga follows a multiracial family struggling to understand where they belong in the young United States. The first book, Necessary Sins, was a Finalist in the Foreword Indies Book of the Year Awards. The second and third books, Lost Saints and Native Stranger, were Editors’ Choices in the Historical Novels Review.
As I was reading Sweet Medicine, the 4th and final installment in the Lazare Family Saga, I was so impressed with the writing quality that I dropped everything and made reading this book my top priority. The writing is so good that adjectives don’t do it justice.
Readers who enjoy romance will be particularly drawn to this book. The sweetness and tenderness of the romance contrasts with the troubled times. If you’re looking for happiness and joy in Sweet Medicine, you will find plenty of moments such as this: “In her spirit, he’d found his equal. In her body, he’d found his home.”
This book contains adult topics and is appropriate for a more mature audience. As for the difficult subject matter, the author bravely covers all of it, including slavery, religion, sex, and violence. Scenes depicting rape are hard to read, and I’m sure they are hard to write as well. Heinous acts committed by villains are to be expected in novels. The author writes of the “suffocating shame and creeping despair” in the aftermath of rape.
The romantic storylines are particularly graphic. Having finished the book and the series, I have a greater understanding why; it was precisely the point. I’ll leave it to readers to arrive there on their own.
After reading a long series, I think it is important that everything be pretty well wrapped up at the end. I was glad to know what became of the primary characters in the Lazare Family Saga and I was happy with how the story ended.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Author Elizabeth Bell has a knack for setting a memorable scene. I think every detail and every word is painstakingly crafted. She doesn’t just write a book, but rather, she creates a work of art. Sweet Medicine is a masterpiece, and the Lazare Family Saga is a poignant, multi-generational family saga.
I think a reader would be satisfied with this book on a stand-alone basis, however, I recommend reading the entire series.
I received an ARC of Sweet Medicine and this is my honest review.
Sweet Lazare concludes the Lazare Family Saga, and what a wonderful series it has been. Author Elizabeth Bell has done a brilliant job with this sweeping saga, combining historical fiction with a heartfelt story of family. Throughout the series I was transported to the West Indies to Charleston to the Wild West and Europe during the mid 19th century—a time of great turmoil and change that is reflected in the lives and loves of this memorable family. I was completely engrossed in Claire’s story, torn between two brothers who love her—one who can heal her body, the other, her soul; haunted by the choices of those who preceded her, living in a country headed to a civil war. I highly encourage readers to start at the beginning of this series, to truly understand the history and to get to know the complex characters who live on the pages of these books.
SWEET MEDICINE is the fourth and final book in the epic Lazare Family Saga by Elizabeth Bell. As with the first three books, NECESSARY SINS, LOST SAINTS and NATIVE STRANGER, I found myself completely engrossed in the sweeping story that has spanned several generations and settings. We pick up where Book Three left off with Clare Stratford, Ésh and David Lazare. In Charleston, South Carolina in 1860, Clare still struggles to understand the circumstances surrounding her beloved mother, Tessa’s death. She is enraptured by her new relationship with Ésh, but still questions why her lifelong friend, David previously shunned her advances. A devastating and tragic event gives Clare the shocking knowledge of the reason for her mother’s death, but it comes at the cost of her physical and emotional well-being. If Clare is to survive the trauma she has endured, Ésh and David will have to work together to help save her. Can Clare heal and find a peace amongst the Cheyenne Indians that once raised Ésh or will she return to her Southern roots in a land that is nearing Civil War? The whole story is beautifully-written and vividly descriptive. Though it covers many difficult topics such as slavery, religion and Indian relations, as well as intimate relationships between the characters, it does so in a sensitive, compassionate and moving way. The entire Lazare Family Saga is compelling and thought-provoking and not to be missed. For the best experience, I highly encourage reading the four books in order. I know the whole series will stay on my mind for a long time to come. Thank you to the author for providing me with an early copy of SWEET MEDICINE.
So, so honored to read an advance copy of the final book of the Lazare Family Saga by Elizabeth Bell.
Real-life characters and events are woven along with fiction in this 4-book sweeping saga. Elizabeth's attention to history and detail is fantastic. This series is not to be missed, especially if you love historical fiction and family sagas. HIGHLY recommend this series!
Reading Sweet Medicine was a wonderful experience. Hand on heart, it has been a long time since I've read a book that has affected me so much. It was just magnificent.
The book got off to a flying start. The opening chapters were so gripping and harrowing, and it continued to keep up the pace, leaving me desperate to read on even though I wanted to put off reaching the end as long as possible.
Clare is a fantastic female protagonist. Her character arc is remarkable and her curiosity, grief and capacity to love make her jump off the page.
This fourth and final book in the Lazare Family Saga is Elizabeth Bell's best one yet (and I really did adore the previous three books as well). Having come so far with these characters, I found it very satisfying to see how their stories concluded but I was also so sad to part with them at the end.
This is such a special book and it was a privilege to read it. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction, romance, memorable characters and excellent writing. You are in for an absolute treat.
EDIT 1st Oct 2024: I read this book for a second time on audio, and loved it even more! The combination of the author's writing craft and the narrator's acting talent made for a powerful experience. Hats off to Elizabeth Bell and Dallin Bradford for telling a marvellous, moving, memorable tale that will stay in my heart forever.
Book four in the Lazare family series continues the intrigue with rape, murder, escaped slaves and secession. Two brothers in love with Clare; she’s in love with one and cares deeply for the other. She marries one and moves west after a brazen escape from prison but the second brother accompanied them on the journey to help provide protection and medical care. But how will this end?
The entire series is well written and holds the reader’s attention from the beginning to the end. Unputdownable!
Have no clue on where to start on this fantastic series of Elizabeth Bell's on the Lazare family! From the first book to the last you begin to know and love and hate the characters in these books! The characters begin to become real as if you were meeting them for the first time to the last book. This historical fiction story has so much history in it from Charleston S.C. to the west where you learn about what was going on out there in the 1800's to right after the "War Between the States". I say it that way because I'm from the south and that's the way I was taught to say about this war. Elizabeth has a way in her style of writing to bring you to the time and what is going on to place you right there and have you seeing and feeling the places and emotions. There is some sexual scenes in these books that Elizabeth has described where it's in good taste but the way she has written it and me as a female she has you transform to what is going on and as you read it stirs you as if it is happening to you and I have read a lot of sex scenes but nothing like this, you will see as you read this wonderful, extremely fantastic story of this family and the adventures and secrets that this family members go through and this is a story that will stay with you for such a long time. You will see what the slaves and the blacks and mixed color people had to endure along with the different Indian tribes on the way that they lived and how they just wanted to live their lives the best they could and not hurt anyone but a lot of people had different ideas. Enjoy this series as I did you will be so glad that you did. I was fortune enough to be able to read these books before they became public so there were time between each book but when this last one came out I went back to the first book and read in order so I could make sure I didn't miss anything and I'm glad I did cause you forget things. The history in this series is fabulous and you can tell so, so much research went into the writing of this amazing story of this family and in the time it happened.. Believe you me you will fall in love with this family and their joys and tragedies that they faced in the time that they lived in!! You are taken from Charleston,S.C.to Paris France,as you are taken from the South to the Wild West.. Forgot to let you know grab some tissues just in case. I really hope you enjoy this series like I did. I just hated to see the story end but I guess it's got to end sometime..
I absolutely loved this series. I really didn’t want it to end. The first book,Necessary Sins, through the last, Sweet Medicine, intertwined amazing characters who continued in each book, cultures, and history. I felt like these characters were my friends. I loved Elizabeth Bell’s style of writing and admire the research she did for this series. I think I’ll read all 4 books again in a few months!
Before you read this book, you definitely have to read the first 3 books in the series in order. I don't think they are stand alone books. I enjoyed the way the saga ended and how the characters lives were resolved but I think this book had a little less story than the other three books but I definitely recommend this series.
Once again, Elizabeth Bell has written a winner. Her ability to describe scenes and emotions are without parallel. I truly have enjoyed every book in this series.
Wow!! What an epic ending to this four-book series!! The series starts with Rene, the grandfather of the Lazare family and follows the paternal side of the family for three generations, ending with this page turning saga of David and Esh. It picks up right were Book Three, Native Stranger, left off with all the action and drama that the series is known for.
All Esh and his bride, Clare, want is to enjoy the true love that they have found but it is not to be. Clare is ripped from his loving embrace and the story begins with heart pounding conflict. Thus, the story begins and follows their quest to find happiness and contentment in the west of the 1860’s.
I highly recommend this book. You are hooked from the first page and cannot put it down. It can be read as a stand-alone book but why would you? All four books will have you glued to your seat until the last page is turned. I loved them all!
Excellent read, Elizabeth Bell captured the struggles of a diverse family with understanding and insight. I recommend this 4 part novel without hesitation.
A different saga of love and sacrifice of a family is told thru 3 generations. A story of forbidden love between a priest and his lady love; a love between a white supremist' s daughter and a boy brought up by a Native American tribe and that same daughter who falls in love again with her childhood friend. All intertwined in South Carolina before the slaves were freed. Couldn't put it down.
Sweet Medicine is the last book in the Lazare family saga and Wow! It was a fantastic conclusion- even though I honestly would love to listen to more books about these characters.
I have tried to listen to two audiobooks since I finished this one, and I just can't! Other books aren't able to hold my interest right now. I think I have my first audiobook hangover.
As with the other books in the series, Sweet Medicine has some very adult and sometimes difficult, like slavery, rape, incest, and murder. There are also some fairly graphic sexual encounters.
Clare and Esh have such a sweet and caring relationship. They discover so many things together and are constantly learning from each other. They choose each other even though they are very different and most people are against their being together. A dangerous situation forces them to leave Charleston, along with Esh's brother David, who Clare had feelings for in the past.
The trio travels back to Esh's Indian home and loves with his family for a while. Esh and Clare live as husband and wife, and David leaves to start a medical practice. Can Clare let David go and be happy living as an Indian with Esh?
There is so much to this book that I could never write a summary good enough to describe it all! I also do not want to reveal too much about the plot because it is so surprising and unexpected. Sweet Medicine is historical fiction at its best.
Again, the author amazed me with the research she must have done. I feel like this saga is truly a masterpiece, and I was so sad that it concluded.
I would really love to see this saga made into a movie!
Oh it was such a bittersweet moment when I got to the end of this audiobook. The fourth and and final book in the Lazare Family Saga series. I was so pleased with how it ended. Secrets were revealed and many threads and loose ends came together for a satisfying ending. However, after spending over 50 hours totally immersed in their world I was sad to be leaving.
Another thoroughly well-researched novel. I love the attention to detail to in aspects of life from the plantation settings to Native American teepees. I have really enjoyed learning a lot more about Cheyenne culture and antebellum South. It’s such a different world to what I know. There are some themes and parts of the story that may be difficult to read but definitely fitting for the time and I’m glad Elizabeth didn’t shy away from the realities. I have always believed it’s important to see how things were to grow and change for the better.
I feel as if I’m part of that Lazare family now. I’ve met many members of the family. Fortunately my favourite characters were all featured heavily in the last couple of books. I loved how well-developed everyone was and how they grew and changed or steadfastly held onto their beliefs- as frustrating as they were at times!
I was initially worried about listening to the series via audiobook as the reviews I’d read spoke about how rich and detailed it was which for me tends to work better in print. However, Dallin the narrator was so engaging the whole way through it and the story just came to life. I’ll miss listening to him. I would definitely recommend this series if you love family sagas and historical fiction.
Thank you so to the author to give me the opportunity to listen to this fabulous series.
This is the satisfying conclusion to the Lazare Family Saga. Going in, I had very mixed emotions about this being the final book. I was mostly sad because I didn’t want it to end. Bell’s writing is so fantastic and no storyline was neglected, that when I finished, I was sated. Kudos to the author for a spectacular achievement in this series 👏👏👏
If you enjoy historical fiction, I highly recommend this series. Some of the subject matter and themes include: ⚫️ 1800’s life in the American South ⚫️ Slavery ⚫️ Racism ⚫️ Native American Culture ⚫️ Medical Practices of the 1800’s ⚫️ Love, love, love ⚫️ Religion ⚫️ Westward Expansion ⚫️ The Underground Railroad ⚫️ Sexuality ⚫️ Spirituality
There are some things that were difficult to listen to. In this last book, there is a heartbreaking rape seen. There are also some customs among the Cheyenne including self mutilation and animal violence that were especially difficult for me. But I understood why Bell included them and why they were crucial to the story of these characters.
I also need to state how incredible the audio performances are by Dallin Bradford in every single one of these books. The voices created for the characters and the emotions conveyed with those voices were spectacular! He is truly gifted and his performance is a great achievement.
I debated reading all 4 books. The series was extremely well written and had a good storyline. I gave it 4 stars because I didn't find the constant explicit sex necessary. I'm far from being a prude, but it got to the point I was rolling my eyes and skimming pages. I wish there would've been more story and less sex. To each their own.
This was a great ending to the Lazare Family saga. I liked how well researched this whole series was. The author's notes at the end where just as interesting as the fictional story. It was great to see how the family and the characters grew throughout. I very much enjoyed this whole series and think that this book and the second last were my favorites.
First I want to say how much I appreciate allot the authors research done for this series. I love how she ended the book with telling about each of the characters and where they ended up. I did not love that she killed off Esh, my favorite character.

🎧❤️ The complete Lazare Family Saga is now in audio! 🎧❤️
I swear, sometimes Sweet Medicine in particular sounds like a full cast recording and not a single, super-talented, hard-working actor: my extraordinary audiobook narrator, Dallin Bradford. I've got a smorgasbord of characters, but Dallin is that good. Not only did he capture the accents, energy, and emotions of my characters, it felt like he was channelling me, my inner narrative voice. He deserves a combat medal for Chapter 18, and he deserves an Audie Award for Chapter 29. Psst: I made him cry!
