Absolutely my favorite Miss Julie retelling!! Filled with great duologues and lots of tension.
Act 1: I adore how the opening of this play encapsulates the teenage experience in a not overly cheesy way (ish), but it is absolutely a good laugh. The relationship between Julie and Christine MEATY and really well portrayed throughout Act 1. The dialogue is super engaging and fun, while also hinting at the downward spiral in the rest of the play. Makes for a great duologue…
And then there’s Jon… Jon is so brilliantly understatedly evil throughout the play but wow Act 1 Jon really makes me mad…
Act 2: Had me GRIPPED!! The Jon/Julie duologue is packed with tension, mocking and a whole mess of feelings. Maybe my favorite duologue OAT for older teens. The Jon/Julie dynamic is so complex they make for such good characters to love to hate.
And then it gets worse for Julie… and worse… and worse. The tension built during the Jon/Julie just completely implodes and Act 2 is packed with shock factor in a way I feel like most plays don’t manage to pull off. I mean the punches just keep coming all the way through. And act 2 Christine is an icon!
Act 3: Though I don’t love act 3 as much as the rest of the play it does tie a neat little bow on the whole story and makes this retelling stand out from the others. Am I mad at Act 3? No. Will I sometimes skip Act 3? Yes.
I would absolutely jump at the chance to see this play again… and jump even further at the change to do the play. (someone cast me as Julie before I’m to old!!)
LOVED THIS!!! I will definitely be using some of this material for my seniors and as soon as I can find a production I will be buying tickets. I got so swept along with this play in fact, that I actually audibly gasped when I was reading on the tube and got to the end of Act 2. Got some funny looks but I was so engrossed I didn’t care. Very powerful and yet naturalistic writing that has also made me want to read Miss Julie by August Strindberg, which is the original piece that inspired the writing of this one. Bravo Laura Lomas. I look forward to reading and watching more of your work.
