Quaid is a quiet carpenter still haunted by his military past, and Levi is a foster kid who finally finds real safety with the McKenzie family. A connection grows between them from the moment Levi arrives, though Quaid keeps his distance until Levi is older. Just as Levi begins to feel secure and hopes for something more with Quaid, his estranged mother suddenly returns claiming to be terminally ill, stirring confusion, old wounds, and doubts about her true motives.

This story is packed with emotion, and the connection between Quaid and Levi is undeniable from the start. Their bond grows slowly and beautifully, rooted in trust, safety, and the kind of love that feels both steady and hard‑won. Levi’s history with his mother is heartbreaking — years of abandonment, manipulation, and confusion — and when she reappears, it threatens to unravel the fragile security he’s finally found. Watching Quaid and the entire McKenzie clan step up to protect him, without hesitation or condition, is one of the most powerful parts of the book. Their loyalty gives Levi the family he’s always deserved. The emotions in this story are well‑described and easy to feel, from Levi’s fear of being unwanted to Quaid’s quiet, unwavering devotion. A tender, deeply felt romance about healing, belonging, and finding love in the safest possible place. This was an MM story with mature content.

I liked Quaid's story the most but still give it 3 stars; the story dragged on too long and made me bored AF.
