Cross McCree was mestizo - a half-breed man of the mountains. A man as rough as the land he loved. Yet passion pooled within him, and Lilly Blackwell feared the depths of his heated gaze.
In her hoopskirts and dainty shoes, Lilly hardly looked the type to survive the rigors of the sheep trail west. But the fire in her spring green eyes had Cross McCree wondering if the fragile-looking flower was really a wild desert rose....
Matlock gives readers a wonderful romance between a half breed mountain man and a widowed southern belle. Cross is a loyal, protective hero that look out for Lilly as she over comes the hardships along the trail drive from Santa Fe New Mexico to California pushing 10 thousand sheep.

"She knew he cared for her... but that it didn't matter. They each had to follow their own road."
Wow. This book was exceptionally well written. It was as if I was on a mule, travelling alongside Cross and Lilly, across the deserts to California. Curtiss Ann Matlock is an amazing storyteller!
I know - such an amazing book and it took me, what? Two months to finish? I know... I've just been occupied with other stuff and stressed with regards to covid. I hope to read more often now that summer time is just around the corner.
"He could ask Lilly to stay, and she might. But his pride refused to ask her... She had to make the choice on her own to stay. If she didn't make the choice, she'd always be looking east."
That writing though... I absolutely love Curtiss Ann Matlock's talents with the written word. Simply, incredible.
This book is a keeper forever!! No matter how many times I read it - I still love it!! It’s all about the romance. This book could have gone so many other ways and been just a boring historical – but the characters (IMHO) were so well written. Both characters changed during the course of their romantic journey. I could smell the sweat, dirt and feel the heat of the desert. Another Alpha male hero who turned into total mush over the love of a woman. And the end – was the best!! On my favorite book list! On my favorite couple list!! BEST USE OF: A card game with a cheating gambler!! Sheep. Mules. Two people so different, yet the same. ALPHA MALE 10 SPUNKY HEROINE 10 CUTE KID 10 RUNNING THROUGH THE ROADS BETWEEN NEW MEXICO AND CALIFORNIA - 10+ HOT SEX 8 HEA(HAPPILY EVER AFTER) oh yes!! PROLOGUE/BOOK IN NEED OF A EPILOGUE No prologue and this book needs an epilogue, only because I need to know what happens to this couple. Where they live, did they have children - etc. Rating System 10 - Perfect! - On the keeper shelf Heat Level 3 – Sensual – Lovemaking scenes are hot but not detailed or long COVER COVERS IT: This cover does reflect the hero and heroine, though her outfit does not reflect anything she wore. The cover does reflect the actual region that the story took place in. HOLLYWOOD CALLING: this is a book that I do not want made into a movie or TV series because the characters would be changed in production and it would be spoiled.
