In Tordesillas, a remote town isolated from the metropolitan centers of Spain, lived the Queen of Castille, daughter of Fedinand and Isabella. Her son and received word to come, as she was gravely ill. Her son, Charles Quint, The Holy Roman Emperor, His Imperial and Apostolic Majesty, was not at ease in Spain, as Flemish was his native tongue. He journeyed there, expecting a long and tedious stay, but she died moments after he went in to see her. Now came the question of his right to rule Spain, along with many other countries under his rule.

Lawrence Schoonover (1906–1980) was an American novelist.

Born in Anamosa, Iowa, Schoonover attended the University of Wisconsin, then worked in advertising before becoming a novelist.

Lawrence Schoonver had four daughters with his wife, Gertrude Hedwig Bonn: Judith Hedwig (1940), Mary Elizabeth (1942), Caroline Grace (1944–2005), and Virginia (1946).

Writing mostly historical fiction, his attention to detail and historical accuracy won him great praise by his contemporaries. Among his many well-known books are The Queen's Cross, The Burnished Blade, Gentle Infidel, The Spider King, and The Prisoner of Tordesillas.

very enjoyable historical novel tied int Queen Isabella. All the Schoonover novels are great.
