To save her mother from the wrath of the gods, Zalika must do one obey. Her king. Her commander. Even when they demand unspeakable cruelty.
When Zalika is ordered to retrieve a Corpian princess serving as a sacrifice in a brutal religious scheme by the king, she crosses paths with a notorious criminal.
Castal, the Mercenary King—a Corpian exile hailing from the frozen north. He is ruthless, infamous, and utterly intolerable. Worse, he has his own plans for the princess. And only death can stop him.
Two warring worlds collide when Castal set sail for his homeland with the princess and his new prisoner, Zalika, in tow. Death awaits Zalika before the vile queen, but she refuses to give a man like him the satisfaction of taking her down.
Yet each clash reveals a dreadful truth—beneath their defiance and fury, she and Castal are shaped by the same ruthless forces.
And neither of them can deny the comfort they find in their matching battle scars.
Author's Mercenary is a dark fantasy romance. It is advised to check TWs beforehand, No romantic cliffhanger.
Oh my goodness I was soooo excited to get back to this world after Thief, and Mercenary absolutely delivered!
This story follows Castal and Zalika and it is filled with adventure, high stakes, iconic banter + spice, intriguing politics and religion, love and acceptance, and found family.
Zalika becomes Castal's prisoner after a mission gone wrong, and let's just say she does not go easy on him AT ALL... and he reciprocates. I loved watching their relationship + acceptance of each other change as they are probably two of the most stubborn characters I've encountered.
Zalika is also a total powerful bad a**, and while she's taller than Castal... he loves all of that about her. They both have a lot more in common than they anticipated.
I also really enjoyed the change of scenery in this story, as well as the larger roles some of our favorite characters played in Zalika and Castal's story.
Now I'm VERY much looking forward to Bai's story....
*Be sure to check the TWs as there are some darker themes explored* Thank you to Amelia Mist for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Amelia Mist does it again! I thoroughly enjoyed picking back up with this motley crew of outlaws, mercenaries, thieves, and merchants. This book explores the darker sides of duty, love, war, and what it means to find solace in a harsh world rife with corruption. It delivers an enemies to lovers story with two people on opposite sides of this fight for survival. In order to overcome their adversaries, first they must confront themselves—and learn where their true loyalties lie: each other.
The spice? Spicing. And Castal's accent? Worth every page turn. *chef's kiss*
