Breast cancer strikes one out of 8-10 women in industrialized countries. Every second breast cancer patient will develop metastases and eventually succumb to the disease. There are still problems in identifying patients at risk for relapse and, even among those with progressive disease, the course of disease may be extremely variable. The above mentioned symposium was organized with the following objectives in mind:

1) to bring together research-oriented clinicians and tumor biologists

2) to focus on mechanisms of factors of tumor biology with prognostic relevance

3) to evaluate new aspects of treatment oriented at tumor biology

With these views in mind, an attempt was made to collate data on more specific, less invasive and less toxic methods of treatment.
